In my case a couple tablespoons of Maalox worked wonderfully when it happened. There's something in it that causes the spasms to relax, and eventually it stopped happening. Also, before you swallow pills, make sure your throat is moist (sip a little water) or coat the pills with something like olive oil. If you try all that and it continues to happen, be sure to check in with your doc, its possible it could be a symptom of a cardiac problem. hth, Judith G
Guest guest
Hi Nil, It is not a supplement, it is an antibiotic (dicloxicillin to be more specific) and it still has not gone away no matter what I do. It is really starting to hurt. It even hurts now if I take a deep breath. Thanks, Dawn dawn> > Sorry for that. What was the supplement? Guest guest
HI Judith, Thanks for the advice. I am sure wishing I had some Maalox around here... Unfortunately it is too late to go out now. I think I will probably call my doctor tomarrow as this is starting to get really painful. Do you know how it can be related to cardiac? Guest guest
Hi Judith, I appreciate the advice. And don't worry, you scare me, I was just wondering. While I know it is a possibility, I am fairly low risk for cardiac problems. I am only 28 for starters. I have low BP, moderately low cholesterol and actually just had a blood test that stated that I was at low risk. In addition, I am one of the people here with less severe CFS symptoms, as I can still be somewhat active (although a 4 1/2 hour trip to the zoo yesterday still has me completely exhausted). I even wondered if maybe it was my asthma and tried my inhaler, but it didn't help. I am to the point now where I am so uncomfortable that I am going to take a narcotic pain reliever just so I can sleep. I have just never had anything like this happen before. I am not completely ruling out the possibility of cardiac, as I said, I really pushed myself yesterday and it came on after that. I was even starting to wonder about the possibility of a tumor. I just wish it would go away! I also wish I had some maalox so I could try it now. I actually am not sure I can try it though. I think it might have gluten in it which I am allergic to. That is why I don't have any around the house. Do you know if there is any other medication that might help? I tried a muscle relaxer last night, but obviously that didn't help. Again, I really appreciate you talking me through this and sharing your experience. Thanks, Dawn > I didn't ask him detail, but heart attacks in women can show very different> symptoms than in men, (combined with other symptoms) and referred pain from> this can show up in many places. Guest guest
Hi, Ever since I've been sick I get pills stuck in my throat - Hmmm. First time I thught about it that way. Often it is from taking too many pills at once, but there are somtimes that are worse than others. One thing that has worked for sure is to take some olive oil, half a teaspoon at a time, until I feel the pill start to move. Then I take a little yogurt, and that usually moves it all down. I've tried a little butter, but the olive oil seems to work best. It happens more at night than during the day. At night I usually have yogurt, take my pills with the yogurt. I guess it's more slippery than water. The WORST thing to do it eat anything hard. That makes it horrible. Good luck. Guest guest
Judith G Maalox contains Magnesium and Aluminum. Magnesium is a muscle relaxant and thus is the substance in Maalox that caused the spasms to relax. For those concerned about the toxic metal, Aluminum, Milk of Magnesium is an option as it only contains Magnesium hydroxide and water. It is very effective for spasms relief. _www.mgwater.com_ (http://www.mgwater.com) _http://www.coldcure.com/html/dep.html_ (http://www.coldcure.com/html/dep.html) Hope this helps mjh In a message dated 4/20/2006 3:19:39 AM Eastern Daylight Time, writes: yes, uncomfortable and scary! my doc thought it was mild esophogeal spasms. Guest guest
Thanks, , I think my problem may have been that I was taking a whole handful at once. And then I layed right down and went to sleep. I often take yogurt with my meds, but I have never tried olive oil. You are the second person to recommend it... I am not sure I could do it though, I have a lot of trouble with nausea and the thought of swallowing oil is not setting well with me. I am afraid it would come right back up which would sort of defeat the purpose. Hmmm. I appreciate the advice. Thanks, Dawn Hi,> Ever since I've been sick I get pills stuck in my throat - Hmmm. Guest guest
dawn, just a note that i have a lot of trouble swallowing small pills - they tend to get stuck in my throat. i always have a lot of cfs " gunk " in my throat (maybe due to my allergies). so what i do now is place my small pills inside empty gel caps i purchase just for this purpose. i usually get 00 size, since it is larger than size 0 caps. since i've been doing this, i haven't had any problems with pills sticking in my throat. (big pills are not a problem.) i hope your throat starts to feel better soon. --maggie collins *********************** Judith Gilbert wrote: >hi Dawn - > >On 4/19/06, Dawn <dawnmunn@...> wrote: > > >> >> >> >>>>>I am just wondering if anyone has ever experienced the sensation of a >>>>> >>>>> >>pill being stuck in your throat for extended periods of time? Guest guest
Dawn, I've had that painful " pill stuck in throat " feeling before. What worked for me is to sip something hot with a little fat in it - tea with milk or cream, hot chocolate, chicken soup (not boullion), etc. The heat seems to help any spasming, and the fat " lubes " the esophagus. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 cups. Eating some banana or applesauce sometimes helps, too. -- el (andreafrankel at sbcglobal dot net) " wake now! Discover that YOU are the song that the morning brings... Guest guest
Hi , That really makes sense. I tried drinking hot tea as fast as I could, but never thought about adding fat (I'm always trying to take fat out of my diet). That really makes a lot of sense. Thankfully, I am finally starting to feel better, but I will certainly keep your suggestion in mind in case it happens again. Guest guest
Hi Maggie, I appreciate your concern. I did in fact call my doctor this morning. He felt that the pill should not still be stuck, but that I had probably suffered some esophageal damage. He told me to take Mylanta every 4 hours to try to coat my esophagus until it heals. But I do agree with you, I was starting to get a little worried. Thanks for caring. Guest guest
Hi Maggie, Where do you buy them? I would have to agree that my problem is with smaller pills, though I didn't realize it until you said it. The pill that got stuck was a gel cap though, so I am a little scared to put any more in my mouth. But I am thinking you are really on to something here with maybe only taking larger ones. Guest guest
Maggie Another option is to empty caps and crush non-enteric coated tabs and dissolve in water or juice. NOthing gets 'stuck' that way. And, absorption may improve. mjh just a note that i have a lot of trouble swallowing small pills - > they tend to get stuck in my throat. i always have a lot of cfs " gunk " > in my throat (maybe due to my allergies).> > so what i do now is place my small pills inside empty gel caps i > purchase just for this purpose. i usually get 00 size, since it is > larger than size 0 caps.> > since i've been doing this, i haven't had any problems with pills > sticking in my throat. Guest guest
hi, dawn. the 00 gel caps i buy are a pretty good size, which is good because: 1) they are big enough to pass the " choke " test and 2) i'm able to stuff them full of more little pills should i desire. for example, i take several small sleeping pills each night, and i can put them all in one 00 capsule. (the sleeping pills i take are the worst kind of pill for me--small circular ones with no slick coating, which almost guarantees they will get stuck in my throat or start dissolving even before i can get them out of my mouth and into my throat!) i live in seattle, and here fred meyer carries them. pharmacies carry them, but ridiculously enough they might require a prescription. once i went to a fred meyer and asked the pharmacist for some, and they said i needed a script. so i walked a few yards over to the health-food section and just got them there! there are a series of co-op grocery stores here, and that's mainly where i get them. i would think most natural-food stores would carry the capsules (they usually come in a plastic bag). probably health-food stores would carry them, too. they've been a life-saver for me! when i lost my bag o' capsules at night a couple of weeks ago, my husband and i started a panicked search--i've become so dependent on them! but--no choking incidents since i've started using the capsules. i should mention that once i got a bad bag of capsules that tasted and smelled sort of yucky. but only once in years on bag-buying! just wanted to pass this on in case you get a bag like this. just get another bag--except for that one bag, the capsules i've gotten have had no discernible taste or odor. hopes this helps! --maggie ******* Dawn Munn wrote: >Hi Maggie, > >Where do you buy them?
