When I take oestrogen, it makes all of my symptoms worse. Much, much,

much, worse. So I don't take any.

I wonder if oestrogen-blockers would be helpful? Tamoxifen anyone?

Hi, all.

The late Dr. R. Lee coined the term " estrogen dominance " and

wrote some books about it, dealing both with premenopause and with

menopause. He advocated use of bioidentical progesterone cream to

balance the estrogen and progesterone. I think his books are worth

reading.

Your symptom relief is primarily from the Magnesium.

Thanks, Rich and Mel for the suggestion of the book. My local health food store

has it in stock, so I'm getting it today. Dr. Lee's website looks good too and

offers valuable information about a lot of issues.

Thanks to everyone else and their suggestions as well!

Yes, I would agree. I added magnesium first (by injection). But the

addition of the progesterone (improvement in sleep and general well

being) and primrose oil (improvement in cramps and irritability)

helped also. They are my PMS package.

I second this. ME munches up the pituitary, which in turn really

messes up the reproductive hormones in both men and women. A lot of

us, I think, really start to notice this in our late 30s, as we begin

the first downshifts toward perimenopause.

Do NOT let them put you on antidepressants and call it a day. Insist

that your gyn check your estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone

levels (all three!).

If any of them are low, be sure to ask for " bioidentical " replacement

-- hormones derived from natural plant sources, instead of chemically-

based synthetics. If you doc won't do this, find one who will. The

bioidenticals are absorbed much more efficiently by the body, so you

only need to use a fraction as much; and they are identical to what

your own body makes (the synthetic ones are not), which reduces the

uncomfortable and dangerous side effects tremendously. If you have

problems with medications, you will almost certainly tolerate

bioidenticals far more easily than the synthetics.

I also found near-total relief with a good, strong progesterone

cream. Recently, I've added just a couple drops of bioidentical

estrogen each night. If it wasn't for these two, I'd probably be on a

host of other medications to address all the symptoms. This simple

regimen stopped all those problems at their root.

I don't take it the first 7 days of the month. On day 8 I start the

Progesterone and take it through the end of the month. Next month, the

same.

You gotta find what works for you. I use the same dosages of both

progesterone and estrogen, every night, throughout my cycle; I don't

vary the formula at all. But I'm also 47 and picking up speed toward

menopause. I don't know that I'd have done the same thing at 37 (or

even 42, when I was on light doses of OTC progesterone only).

Doing the cyclic variation thing never worked well for me. YMMV, of

course. Like so many of our treatments, you gotta play with dosages

and timings until you get them just right.

Hi and others,

May I ask what particular form of progesterone and estrogen do you use?

What dosage?

I'm a hormonal mess.I've suffered with PMDD for years.

I'm 49 and pretty certain I'm in Peri.Irregular cycles,heavy prolonged

bleeding and severe cramps.

Blood tests normal........naturally.I keep telling the docs it's pointless

as my blood hormone levels are always normal even though

clearly I'm in trouble.

Each month I have to spend a few days in bed.My periods put me into a CFS

relapse.

The insomnia is deadly.

Mt Ferritin levels are always low despite iron supplements.

My doctor is suggesting a progesterone IUD(can't recall the commercial

name).

Also mentioned taking oral progesterone for two weeks prior to period.

Last time I used a progesterone cream, when it was all the go due to Dr Lee's

book,I spotted badly all month.

Also had PMS type symptoms with it.

Every treatment I've tried thus far has given me menopausal symptoms, hot

flashes etc.

Cheers

I am using progesterone lotion by Karuna. If progesterone does not work for

you may give a try to chamomile tea. Start drinking it 4 or 5 days prior to

start of period. It might help to some extend for PMS. best wishes.

I used Pro-Gest for years. It's a good, very high-dose brand. You can

also go to GNC or the Vitamin Shoppe and ask them for their highest-

dose brands (I think the legal OTC limit in the US is 480mg/ounce).

It's a cream that you apply to the wrists, inner elbows, armpits,

knees, hands, or feet -- that is, wherever the skin is thinnest --

right before bed. It's good to vary location night to night.

If the OTC versions work, you're golden. If not, you need to go see a

doctor and get the labs done. A doctor can also prescribe the

estrogen drops if you need them. They're sublingual drops that

combine 2-3 different forms of estrogen, and are generally made up by

a compounding pharmacy to fit your specific needs.

BTW, I'd caution women with ME to be very, very careful with

Promensil and some of the other clover or soy-based " menopause

supplements " out there. The isoflavones in them are VERY hard on the

thyroid. Most of us already have very fragile thyroids, and they may

not be able to take the hit. If you're taking one of these

supplements and your symptoms are not improving, get off now.

> I'm a hormonal mess.I've suffered with PMDD for years.

Peri can start as early as 35. Most people think it's just the year

or two before; but it's really the whole long, slow slide that starts

in the mid to late-30s as the system gradually dwindles.

> Blood tests normal........naturally.I keep telling the docs it's

" Normal " is a very fluid concept. What one doc or lab considers

normal may be way out of whack according to another. If your doctor

can't figure this out, it's high time s/he admitted as much and

passed you on to an endocrinologist who can.

Sweet Jesus.

A progesterone IUD? That's WAY overkill (and I say that as a woman

who loves her IUD). IUDs are notorious for making periods worse the

first six to 12 months, which is the last thing you need. And if it

doesn't work, removing it is no fun.

And run screaming from " oral progesterone " , which is not really

progesterone, but a synthetic progestin -- a whole other hormone

entirely, and one that can make things worse.

> Last time I used a progesterone cream, when it was all the go due to

How long ago was this? If it was more than a couple years, you may be

in a different place now. Or you may need to use it in different

parts of your cycle; or perhaps less of it.

It does sound like you're probably seriously ready to try

bioidentical estrogen. One way to get around your doc on this is to

look in your Yellow Pages for " compounding pharmacy " -- a pharmacy

that makes its own meds. Call up the pharmacist, describe your

situation, and tell him/her you want to try natural HRT. Odds are

very good that s/he will be able to point you to a doctor who will be

more amenable to actually treating you, instead of trying to pacify

you with pharmco-poison-of-the-month.

I wish I could find the recent article but I don't recall where I read

it, basically, applying it at home yourself on the skin you will get

very variable doses, which is not necessarily so great. Also I read at

some point that the progest cream had actual progesterone in it (not

just yam-based). Also, though bio identical are certainly better than

horse's urine, they are hormones nonetheless. Taking them for years

and years, one has to be fully aware that there is a risk. This risk

may definitely be worth it to many for quality of life, but hormones

are hormones. They do not cause cancer but they do spur the growth of

hormone dependent cancers. They are tumor promoters, in other words.

For many years people were, for instance, talking up the benefits of

soy and I never really trusted it as a cancer-preventer and to calm

down your hormones. I noticed if I ate a lot of soy I got heavier

periods and more PMS. So I just started avoiding soy. Now a lot of

literature is coming out to indicate that these high-soy products,

used daily, are not necessarily healthy and may be damaging to health.

They increase estrogen levels in men and women. Etc. Just throwing in

a cautionary word here. I do think if you're going to supplement with

hormones its wise to see an experienced doctor who will test estrogen,

progesterone and testosterone, give you the lowest dose possible,

monitor your blood levels, etc.

I do not tolerate oral magnesium, so I give myself an injection once a

week. To find the right dose of magnesium taken orally, you want to

do what they call bowel tolerance. You start at a low dose and slowly

build up the dose until you have loose stools. Then you drop down one

dose and that supposedly is the correct dose for your body. I never

got to that point because my stomach did not tolerate magnesium.

Primrose oil, I started at 250mg the first two weeks of the month

(first day being menses), then doubled the amount for the second two

weeks. If you start at a too high of a dose with Primrose oil it can

give you a head ache, so start low. BTW, Primrose oil stopped my

spotting in two days when I started taking it.
