Guest guest
Wellbutrin is just another SSRI. We used it and while some folks respond favorably, Wellbtrin made our son lethargic and withdrawn. We stopped after less than one week. It is as safe as all SSRIs so it is worth an attempt to see if you get a good response. Good luck. Becky
Guest guest
Trina - Wow, you've got staying power. We've only been with Goldberg 5 months and I'm already getting frustrated at slow progress. Wellbutrin is just another SSRI, commonly prescribed for depression. May Dr. G wants you to switch from your present SSRI to Wellbutrin. He had us switch from Paxil to Celexa - same sort of thing. Sometimes one type works better than another type for some kids. Is your child a " late onset " case as well?
Guest guest
Dear Trina, My son is on Wellbutrin. Dr. Goldberg prescribed it for him several months ago. We started with a very small dose and then went to time released 100mg. I have not seen any negatives with this medication. I asked a couple of other doctors their opinion on it also. They did not feel it was dangerous. One of my son's tutors took it for depression several years ago. She told me it helped her focus. My son also takes SSRI. I find that the dosage of SSRI has to be constantly monitored with my son as he can get hyper if it is slightly off. wellbutrin-anyone else tried it? Hi. I just had my monthly conference call with Goldberg yesterday, and we were discussing how my son, even after 4 years of his regimine, is still not " tuned in and bright eye " . He still has poor attending skills, despite a full time ABA program, and is very much still into his own world and thoughts. He is 6, and you can still talk about him with him right there in the room with you and he doesn't seem to even notice. He has gained leaps and bounds in the academic category, but is still self absorbed and can't stay focused. He also stims/or tics alot. Goldberg suggested Wellbutrin. He said it should improve focus. Our son is already on the usual Goldberg stuff, SSRI, antifungal, antiviral, and even Kutapressin. Has anyone else had him prescribe this for their child? I can't help but wonder why, if it is so great and will improve attention and focus, has he not mentioned it before now. We have been seeing him for 4 years and our son has always had an attention problem. Any advice? Trina
Guest guest
Hi I don't know about welbutrin but I can't help but wonder if your child is getting regular sensory integration throughout every day. That can often help with stimming and attention issues. The other thing is there are just some things that are part of the autism that I don't think will ever go away completely. It is just part of the neurology. If you child isn't getting SI, find a very reputable therapist who is trained in doing the sensory integration and praxis test and get your child evaluated. With regular therapy done on a daily basis, (which you can eventually have them doing as regular activites like swimming etc...) you may see improvement. Guest guest
Trina, Dr. Goldberg prescribed it for my daughter as well; it is my understanding that he prefers to achieve the " bright-eyed, tuned in " kid by optimizing the functioning of the immune system (what you've been trying to do for the past few years); he goes to these other meds when an additional boost is needed that has not been achieved by the preferred way. My daughter does not have autism ---she has ADD and some other issues---we were trying to improve her focus, mood, and learning by antifungal, low dose SSRI, dietary restriction etc---she still was struggling---so we went to additional meds. Hope this helps Kate
Guest guest
Trina, We tried Wellbutrin for our daughter @ Dr. G's recommendation. It didn't quite do the job for her so we ended up with a combp of respidol ad celexa, which has really helped her focus. I believe for each child the type of ssri might vary as to effectiveness. Good Luck! Tina Hendrix
Guest guest
Hi Trina, Our son is also six and has been seeing Dr. Goldberg since he was 2.5. Recently we have started wellbutrin to try to find that elusive " missing piece " that would make him pay attention more. As in your case, academics is not the problem as long as he is paying attention. Also, circle times in preschool, etc... all go extremely well when he pays attention. To make a long story short, the wellbutrin does appear to have helped with the attention. We started at a small dose for 10 days and then slightly increased the dose. He has started to comment so much on his surroundings, people in the room, events that are coming (like Easter) that we are amazed once again by the difference some meds make. I think Dr. G. waited to introduce this to see if our little one was going to be able to make himself attend to situations. It's frustrating to think that we could have been using this before, but I commend his cautiousness in only prescribing when it is clear that the child cannot learn it on his own. We have had moderate attention issues, but have not really complained to Dr. G. about them. I think our attention (or lack of it) finally came up on my list of things I think our son needed to work on. Up until now, we had so many other things to work on. If you would like any other info, please email me and I will be happy to chat. Our little boys sound very similar. Good Luck. Lori

Guest guest
I agree with Tina. Medications have to be tailored to meet the individual needs of the child. The fact that one child does or does not do well is helpful information but not predictive of what another child will do with the same medication. The fact that these children carry the same diagnoses is somewhat confusing because it does not reflect the fact that each child's dysregulated immune system is reacting with his/her brain in a unique way. Unfortunately the only way to test which drugs work the best and at what does is trial and error! Let's all keep earning money for Kids@MAT so that we can get those need immune modulators into the kids that need them! Kathy
Guest guest
Hi Tina and Trina, We use risperdol and celexa too and it is very helpful. We just switched from prozac to celexa and after about a week of sleepiness he is doing great. His focus could always be better but he is still getting sick so much. We have only been seeing Dr. G for 6 mo, but no doubt we've seen improvement. Josh is 8 so we are getting started late, but any help to him is worth it. Tina, does your son eat alot on the risperdal? Also, how much does your son take? Good luck, Re: wellbutrin-anyone else tried it? > Trina, > > We tried Wellbutrin for our daughter @ Dr. G's recommendation. It works wonders. Hang in ther with Dr. G. it takes a while to get a sick system feeling better and on the right track!
