Hair salon chemicals and transdermal absorption

Hi All

I have read with astonishment about PWCs having hair bleaches and perms. My

doctor said not to go near a hair salon because the air is heavily loaded with

chemicals which PWCs do not need to inhale, and the transdermal absorption of

potent chemicals through the scalp is to be avoided at all cost. Especially

when you are stuck under the heating hood to increase the chemical action - on

your scalp with dilated blood vessels in your scalp.. Made good sense to me.

I have fine straight hair these days. Natural grey. Oh well... My cats think

I am beautiful anyway!

Comments, anyone?

Re: Re: winter colds and viruses

I'd like to hear your metals test results, Marcia. I've never done

this and certainly, between the teeth/bridge problems and standing in

the yard soaking in pesticide to kill fleas, I have a " good

potential " for this too.

I'll meet with him tomorrow afternoon, I plan to share the results with the

list, yes will be interesting to see just how many metals they found and what

levels!

This is why I do my color at home, using Naturcolor (an herbal-based,

non-ammonia hair color sold at Whole Foods and other markets). No

fumes from other clients; no fumes from my own processing; and no

heat required.

I'm not as chemically sensitive as many of you...but am not about to

take the risk. I've been doing this for six years, and my hair is

fine. And so am I.

I color my hair every couple of weeks, I know its bad for us, but I do

it anyway. I use Framesi (at the salon) which is less bad than some of

the others. I've researched this in depth and the darker hair colors

are a little more dangerous but they haven't been able to definitively

pin down elevated risk. Its the ammonia that's most annoying and in

Framesi its low ammonia. I don't think bleach is bad its just h202

which we have been discussing for instance putting in our ears and

some folks put in their veins.

It depends on your tolerance level and your vanity. I tried the

natural haircolors one summer adn they were lusterless. They're okay

in the lighter colors I think--the blondes--but that doesn't work for me.

Well its an overall balance. I filter my water, I use austin and iq

air filters (high end), I eat organic foods whenever I can, I never

use synthetics, I tend to get used furniture (beautiful stuff actually

locally) etc etc. But I live in NYC what are you going to do about

that? I breathe in stuff daily and have for decades. Everybody's

polluted even the arctic whales. Now there is also psychology to be

considered (and I " m going to highlight my hair again soon...I haven't

in ages). That is, if I go out with grey hair then all the men will

probably ignore me (unless I go out with a pushup bra in the middle of

winter). There is a psychological deficit to being invisible. If you

get your hair colored and blow dried and dress up a little and look

good you get a lot of positive feedback and that lifts your mood and

that affects your immune system. So I have just decided, I want my

hair colored and that's that.

I'm all for overall balance. For instance, I don't " do " much of

anything -- I'm a pretty basic person to start with. However, living

right here where I do, I do notice that I'm experiencing slow death

by Monsanto (allergic reactions to pesticides, fertilizers, and

probably GM crud blowing around in the air during 3 of the seasons).

I'm trying to contend with **that** discovery in recent years.

On the psychological side, I can see the advantages to being

absolutely invisible, especially when feeling crumby. (And around

here, wearing a pushup bra in the winter would net you nothing except

pinched skin, as you'd be hidden under Nanook of the North apparel

anyway. Heh-heh. A " flirty " muffler, anyone?)

And...I seriously consider my biggest conquest over toxic mold to be

when I struggled with it for several years and then finally...got my

divorce!

See? There's all kinds of ways to bump up your humor and hence your

immune system. If I didn't laugh once in a while, all the distilled

water and purified/natural this-and-that is for naught.

And as far as smoking is concerned, don't forget postive things about

tickling your nicotinic receptors periodically, keeping away

Alzheimer's, etc, not to mention helping you stay awake when you're

really dragged out with fatigue.

All in all, I'm all for the " envelope " theory. And mine is almost

never SASE and usually COD!

LOL.

I think we all make our own decisions based on how our bodies react

and what we want to do about that. I went off all grains, especially

gluten, about six months ago and I'm not going back. Potatoes and

beans provide my main starch now. Its better. I'm very sensitive to

molds myself, waaaaay sensitive and have major fungal issues, and

grains according to mercola just have too many fungal toxins because

of the way they're processed.

So we do what makes us feel better and we weigh the relative cost.

Sometimes we learn only through random circumstance. For instance, my

shower curtain liners used to get mildewy and I'd replace them every

few months. Well, because of the crazy demolition in my building and

the fact that I had 4 leaks and one flood, I requested the building

reimburse me for a dehumidifier to dry out the bathroom ceiling. I set

it at 35%, and it turns on when it needs to. Anyway, the shower

curtain liner is completely clear after months. So I inadvertantly

learned the obvious and my bathroom is now definitely mildew and mold

free.

Jill, I'm a dog and cat owner (it's the beasts who have saved my

life) and I noticed, in particular, your mention of potatoes. When

dogs are very allergic, they are put on a potato and I think lamb

diet. (I've just known people who've been this route -- I haven't

with my critters yet.) I wonder what the correlation is there...?

Also, do you think that potatoes is such a hot idea, given that 100%

of our potatoes are now genetically modified? I suppose, in the end,

much of it is a toss-up.

Well, youcan't get along without some carbs esp. me considering I'm

naturally very slender. And I eat organic potatoes. You know, I think

people are worrying a little too much. You can get so rigid that you

turn yourself into a bubble baby, can't eat anything, etc. What can I say?
