Guest guest
Helen, Do you have a sense if someone is sitting up that such heart abnormalities would still show? I am unable to stand more than 2-3 seconds, so I could only sit up. Thanks, Jim
Guest guest
Hi Jim: Yes, they have seen abnormalities in people only sitting with their feet down on the Impedance machine. Tried to check that with me but the electrodes quit working. They didn't try to check me sitting with the echo machine. I was told to sit with my feet up and not to stand still. Walking a little bit is okay, probably because movement keeps the blood from pooling as rapidly as it does when one is standing still. If you sit with your feet on the floor, blood can pool there and your heart has to work against gravity. Dr. Cheney said something about the heart not being able to cope with gravitational stress. Guest guest
Since the heart problems in CFS appear to be due to reduced filling (diastole) of the left ventricule, decreased elasticity is a big part of that. The ventricle actually has to distend in order to accept enough blood. As I remember the increased load put on heart cells (often because of high blood pressure but also occuring because of cell death) causes them to enlarge and move around. When this occurs increased Ang II (and superoxide) production results in increased collagen and fiber deposition in the gaps made when these heart cells shifted. This causes the heart to enlarge (hypertrophy) and causes it to stiffen and lose its elasticity. The heart can make up for this reduced elasticity by forcing more blood into the left ventricule when it distends. OVer time however the increased pressure put on the left ventricule causes more enlargement as the heart cells try to adapt to it. Its like a vicious circle - every attempt to adapt to the cardiac problem exacerbates it in the long term. The increased pressure shuts down some of the circulation in the blood vessels leading to the lungs - this is one of the things that causes the hallmark symptom of shortened breath during exercise. When you try to exercise your heart has to pump more blood - this increases the pressure put on the left ventricule to distend - and the increased pressure cuts off circulation to the lungs - and you cant catch your breath. THe reason heart failure would be so anomalous in CFS is that it is for the most part non-progressive. If CFS patients have a heart failure that is indeed non-progressive can you imagine what an astounding thing this would be to the cardiac world. That is, after all, exactly what they are looking for! Heart failure patients take all sorts of drugs to ramp down the sympathetic nervous system and others in order to stop the progression of heart failure. If Cheney can prove this one think cardiac researchers would be ALL OVER CFS patients in order to find out how they do this. THere is an ENORMOUS amount of money spent on heart failure every year. CFS patients could be a sort of rosetta stone. ONe way CFS patients might avoid heart failure is by their down regulation of Ang II. CFS patients tend to have low blood volume but normal Ang II levels. (Ang II raises blood volume). HEart failure patients have high Ang II levels that not only increase their blood volume but do alot of other really negative things. This could, however, mean that low blood volume in CFS is preventative! It would be interesting to ask CHeney about this. helen9jora <helenjora@...> wrote: I am back from the Cheney clinic where I got a Vivid 7 echocardiogram yesterday. Dr. Cheney was there talking to them re technical matters and in a very kind way explaining a few things to me as the test progressed. It might mean that some patients need to take the antibiotics for some time before taking Benicar, if, indeed, they need to take Benicar at all. Guest guest
Jim, My supine( laying flat) cardiac output was 3.37 on the Vivid 7. So it can show your problem laying down. I would guess that you would have a low cardiac out put. Are you a patient of Dr Cheney's? If so, would you back channel me? Guest guest
Helen, Here's a discussion of the IVRT, taken from a Google search: Isovolumic relaxation time (IVRT, IRT) - this (the time from aortic valve closure to mitral valve opening) is measured by simultaneous Doppler and M-mode echo, or better still by simultaneous phonocardiogram and transmitral Doppler (Roelandi). If it's prolonged, it indicates poor myocardial relaxation. A normal IRT is about 70±12 ms, perhaps about 10ms longer in those over forty. With abnormal relaxation, the value is usually in excess of 110ms, with restrictive filling, under 60. For sure I am out of breath at very slight exertions. As for asking Cheney about stuff, I have to back off on that. Got my insurance statement today, for that June visit that cost me $2875, my insurance kindly reimbursed me $101. How generous of them! I'd cuss, but some might not wanna hear it. I thought that since I had a cardiac diagnosis and a test was run, that they'd actually pay something on the bill. A naive notion, evidently. Now I've gone and incurred another bill for the echo this week, and who knows what will happen with that. But I won't be scheduling any chats with Cheney for a long while, just can't afford it. I'll take the pig heart cell medicine when it becomes available and see if I feel better over time. Guest guest
Rich, Thanks once again. Dr. Cheney asked me how old I was, which is 49, almost 50, and my number was 87, I think. Can't quite remember. He said it was 2 pts high for my age. But then I'm about to cross the decade barrier, so who knows. This IVRT was the only value that was abnormal on the Vivid 7 Echo when I was supine, but it all went downhill when I was at 70%. Guest guest
Hi Marcia: I am happy to share what Cheney tells me, just wish I had it together to tape record him when I was there. It was a very expensive conversation. Yes, ImmunePro is on the protocol sheet he gave me. I asked him about Goatien but he'd never heard of it. I have some of it left so I taking it and putting lipoceutical glutathione in it. When that runs out I think I will get those glutathione suppositories Rich mentioned, because they aren't so expensive. Like you I am shell-shocked today about expenses. At least my teeth aren't so bad but I was mercury poisoned no doubt getting my fillings out twenty years ago with no protection. I got composite, whatever that is, in my molars which isn't supposed to work or last very long but half of them are still going good for me despite all odds. Last winter I went to see Wesley Shankland the cavitation expert who is only two hours away and he ran those tests on me and I didn't have cavitations. There is one area that bothers me but I guess it's just low gum. I just have fillings in most of my molars but not elsewhere. No root canals. Figure I'll just have a tooth pulled if they start talking root canal. Are dentures bad, reactive, do you know? Hoping for the best for you with your dental woes and expenses. Guest guest
That's basically like having no health insurance at all! One wonders what you are paying all that money for healthy insurance for? I didnt have health insurance when I saw Cheney and I still remember and cringe at my $1800 phone call ($500 to assess my e-mail beforehand). They will never pay for a good portion of his fees. I saw an expensive thyroid specialist once - he charged $375 an hour and the insurance company wouldn't pay above a certain amount per hour - they consider it 'unreasonable' and, of course, they wont pay for long visits but they should certainly pay for the bike ergometry (did you have that done?) and the doctors assessment of that, etc. I think some people get very good re-imbursements at least for the tests done with Cheney. It sounds like there must be something on there you can contest. Cheney is certainly well aware of the intricacies of insurance billing - maybe his office can give you grounds to contest some of the non-payment (???) helen9jora <helenjora@...> wrote: Cort: They didn't say anything about my heart being enlarged, but maybe it is, I don't know. Guest guest
I just had a root canal that went really well. I believe you can actually have cavitations even if you have your teeth pulled. Cheney was worried about a possible cavitation where I'd had a tooth pulled. I could never afford to get it checked. I spent so much money on those appointments I didnt have much left over to get tests done. My mother-in-law has had great resutls from taking flax seed oil for gums. I have receding gums - my dentist told me to stop using a battery operated tooth brush and not to brush so hard! helen9jora <helenjora@...> wrote: Hi Marcia: I am happy to share what Cheney tells me, just wish I had it together to tape record him when I was there. Guest guest
Thanks, Cort: I'm not paying for my insurance now, or not much. It's disability retirement insurance from my former job and I'm lucky to have it. The problem is that no one talks to a doctor for five hours and so they only covered a baseline standard office visit. I didn't want to talk to him that long but that's what happened. Now that I know my insurance won't pay any of it, I'll push harder to keep conversations to a minimum. The only test he did was the impedance cardiography on this visit. The echo test was done on the second visit. When I saw him in 95 and did the bike test, my insurance picked up about half my visit, but that's before they went to this preferred provider network, and of course some specialist in NC won't be in the network. Guest guest
Tony: The office visit in June was for $2875, which involved five hours of consultation including the cardiac impedance test. The echocardiogram was done earlier this week and is a separate charge. I believe it was $900 and I don't know what my insurance will do with that. Cheney is definitely passionate about his new idea, but he's also seeing one patient a day for office visits, and is certainly a loquacious individual. Guest guest
When I saw him he was very willing to try to work around my financial needs. Unfortunately this only goes so far - he is very talkative - but you can give him a time limit and he will try to stick to it. Guest guest
It means talkative. I've never gotten the impression from Cheney that he is motivated by greed whatsoever. > > > > > > I am back from the Cheney clinic where I got a Vivid 7 > > > > > echocardiogram > > > > > > yesterday. > > > > > > > > > > > > The test confirmed the findings of the Impedance > Cardiogaph > > > that > > > > my > > > > > > heart function is abnormal when I am in a vertical > position. > > I > > > > > didn't > > > > > > come back with any written data from the test. Guest guest
With 2800 dollars you could buy the right amount of antibiotics to fix your bad heart. This would cover me comfortably for a year of treatment, 'whihc I will improve with'.The other pain is what type of herb and weed does he throw at this problem?Does he also sell the supplements to band aid the problem. You may want to bring up to him that mild anemia, low blood pressure are also HIGH MARKERS for a heart infection- which he shows no interest in tackling. tony > > > > > > > I am back from the Cheney clinic where I got a Vivid 7 > > > > > > echocardiogram > > > > > > > yesterday. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > The test confirmed the findings of the Impedance > > Cardiogaph > > > > that > > > > > my > > > > > > > heart function is abnormal when I am in a vertical > > position. > > > I > > > > > > didn't > > > > > > > come back with any written data from the test. Guest guest
As I said before I am allergic to seven classes of antibiotics, and thus his treatment is the only viable avenue for me to pursue. Not to mention that fact that I've had a high titer to EBV as the only microbe I've tested positive for in the course of this illness, which as a virus is not treatable by antibiotics. You may well be right that antibiotics are the way out of this illness for some, but that road is blocked for me. I did have strep throat once, which is not this staph you talk about, and you haven't addressed that either, when I asked you about it. I am the first to admit I don't know much about bacteria, but I know strep and staph are not the same kind. I am not convinced that I have a chronic bacterial infection, there is nothing in your presentation of your theory that is cohesive or intelligible to me, but perhaps you laid it out more distinctly before I came on this list. Also I have no training in science and oftentimes can't follow your comments. Requests for clarification have not been fulfilled in a manner that I can comprehend. The mold theory makes more sense to me, given my allergy to antibiotics. Cheney does think that infection of some kind is at the root of the problem but is more interested in pursuing terrain at this point in time. I will be taking an antiviral on his program, I made a point to ask about that on this last visit, because my gut instinct is that a virus damaged my heart, and I fear it is still lurking in my body. My problem is not with Cheney, I feel he gave me value for my time there, but with my insurance company, whose services have declined markedly in the last decade. I suspect that is true throughout this country, after all we have better things to do with our resources than help sick people, like pursue oil wars. > > > > > > > > I am back from the Cheney clinic where I got a Vivid 7 > > > > > > > echocardiogram > > > > > > > > yesterday. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > The test confirmed the findings of the Impedance > > > Cardiogaph > > > > > that > > > > > > my > > > > > > > > heart function is abnormal when I am in a vertical > > > position. > > > > I > > > > > > > didn't > > > > > > > > come back with any written data from the test.
