Guest guest
Hi Rich: Yes, I think that the heterogenity of PWC is one of the primary obstacles to finding " the solution. " As there are multiple primary causes, complicated by interactions between them, for the symptoms of CFS, what works for one person will make another worse, for instance, and the entire situation becomes quite complex. To somehow classify people and try to break out populations with and without certain syndromes, such as adrenal exhaustion, would be a great help. It seems like one of the big fault lines is between those who have noticable chronic infections and those who don't. I think I got adrenal exhaustion due to an genetic (shared with both brothers and my father, plus a few cousins on that side) severe hypoglycemia, or unstable and low blood sugar. My father has something like CFS which is nearly killing him and he suffers extreme distress, even life-threatening tachycardia, if he fails to eat every few hours, can't even smell alcohol without vomiting, etc. However, he has few infections. These apparently genetic sugar cravings would set me on a rollercoaster of blood sugar, which the adrenals would have to jump to try to bring under control nearly daily for years. Plus, the stress of chronic viral infections and a high pressure lifestyle probably led to adrenal exhaustion; I am fairly clear as to the period of time when the adrenals seem to have failed me and the energy gave way to exhaustion. I am on a no-sugar, no-refined-carbs, no-caffiene, no-alcohol diet, but I find it very hard to stay on with regard to the sugar (alcohol, fortunately, is not a problem). I'm starting to mouth glutamine to counter sugar cravings. Has anyone had any experience with glutamine for cravings? However, in addition to this, I have autoimmune (presumably) primary ovarian failure and a poorly functioning immune system, both a mystery to every medical doctor (admittedly, not many; I'm a veteran self-medicator) I've ever seen. I read HD 's interesting work on selenium and AIDS, decided that maybe other enteroviruses could guilty of gobbling up selenium like HIV does (an idea he seconds, incidentally) and have had good results with ingesting lots of selenium. My two chronic viral infections have abated significantly recently. I've been able to stop the anti-virals I had taken for years. His book on the subject of AIDS (which I extrapolated to suggest what other chronic viruses could be doing) and selenium deficiency is available for free download at hdfoster.com. He is a geographer and knows interesting things like the fact that Senegal, which is a selenium-rich enviroment, has only 8% HIV, while nearby countries are as high as 30% positive, despite similar behaviors and exposures. And other very fascinating tidbits. I have also added other supplements, so I'm not sure it is the selenium. Has anyone tried selenium for chronic viral infections? My chronic (10-year) neck-and-shoulder stiffness/pain has also disappeared (after a week of debilitating herx) in the past two months with the full range of minerals plus niacin I started recently. Has anyone else had any relief from muscle pain with full spectrum macro- and trace mineral supplementation and niacin?
