Hi, Don.

Yes, it has been a while since we've interacted. Sorry to be slow

getting back to you this time. I was off kayaking and camping. Are

you still producing and eating raw foods?

Sorry, I haven't heard of any new efforts involving

AMP gel. I still think this is a very interesting treatment, and am

sorry it has not been pursued. You and my former boss both had good

results from it.

As far as the antiviral treatments are concerned, I hope to hear

some more about that at the upcoming AACFS meeting in October. At

the last meeting, Dr. Dan reported on some success with

Foscarnet in a few PWCs who tested positive for HHV-6 encephalitis.

As I understand it, this treatment must be carefully monitored.

Dr. did not report on long-term results with these

patients. Maybe he will have more to say this time. Dr. Ablashi,

who is currently the President of AACFS, is also interested in viral

treatment, and has done some work on it.

Ultimately, the immune system has to pick up the ball, whether one

is treating viruses, bacteria, or fungi, using antivirals,

antibiotics or antifungals, respectively. I think that whether or

not a viral infection will return after treatment will depend on the

condition of the immune system. I think that part of the problem

with the immune system in CFS is glutathione (and cysteine)

depletion, part is a lack of the right amount of cortisol secretion

(because of the HPA axis dysfunction), and part is involved with the

tricks that the bacteria and viruses play on the immune system to

confuse it, for their own advantage. Efforts can be made to rebuild

the glutathione, using undenatured whey protein products such as

ImmunePro, combined with either intravenous fast pushes of

glutathione or sublingual troches, or maybe glutathione

suppositories. The influence of the viruses or bacteria on the

immune system should be knocked out if their populations are lowered

enough by treatment. (Along this line, the new Marshall Protocol

looks like a very interesting way to go after cell-wall-deficient

bacteria that are hiding inside human cells. Dr. Marshall goes so

far as to say that if the bacteria are knocked out, the immune

system may be able to take care of the viruses effectively.) I

don't know yet how to fix the HPA problem, though taking a small

amount of hydrocortisone for a short time might help.

I think that you probably know that taking supplemental lysine and

minimizing foods that are high in arginine (such as chocolate and

nuts) will suppress some of the herpes family viruses (at least the

simplex viruses and the zoster (chicken pox-shingles) types, and

maybe more). Transfer factors and olive leaf extract have also been

found to help with viruses by some PWCs. One person on the Research

list says that the herb officinalis (Lemon balm) has been

helpful to her.

Hi, Don.

I responded to your question about progress in AMP treatment in an

earlier post.

Concerning whether AMP would be a better treatment than building up

glutathione, I really don't know. Actually, I don't see them as

being in competition. There seems to be a depletion in glutathione

in many PWCs, and it's a very important substance for every cell of

the body, so I see a need for building it back up. As was the case

when we discussed this quite a while back, I still don't know how

AMP treatment works on the biochemical level. Like you, I would

like to see more study go into it. As you know, for a natural

substance like AMP, there isn't the financial incentive for

pharmaceutical companies to go after it, because it can't be

patented and there is thus no chance to have a monopoly on it. The

only way this will get studied is if a government agency or a

private foundation does it. For that to happen, it has to compete

against a lot of other " pet " projects. Somebody like Dr. Ritchie

Shoemaker might be a possibility, if he became interested. He has

his own research organization, and he has been willing to look at a

lot of interesting things.
