Lance,

This is what I would do in your situation.

-High potencey probiotics + prebiotics (FOS and/or arabinogalactins)

-Betaine HCl containing pepsin with meals (1-7/meal)

-Test for GIT parasites at the parasitology center

-Test for salivary testosterone (Dr. Teitelbaum writes a deficiency is

present in ~70% of his male patients) and cortisol (Dr. Teitelbaum writes a

deficiency is present in ~2/3's of his patients). Each of these can cause

weight loss and muslce wasting.

-Consider food sensitivities (including gluten/casein intolerance) and try a

strict elimination diet. Eggs, fish, peanuts, brewers yeast, beef, corn,

legumes/lentils, citrus, nightshade vegetables, coffee, chocolate, foods

rich in or containing salicylates, preservatives, glutamate, amines,

nitrates, tartrazine, artificial antioxidants, propionate, plus any foods

the individual strongly craves are strong possibilities common in CFS.

-Test for heavy metals (lead & mercury), each of which can cause weight loss

-If low appetite is present test for iron/B12 deficiency

Hi Lance,

I've read your post and keep thinking that the info. is just a tease. I a

web page with complete data would be useful. Including length of time and

reaction to treatments.

I appreciate the responses. I have had serum testosterone done -was

normal - but salivary not done. Cortisol has been normal. Iron normal,

but ferritin elevated.

Haven't had OAT done - I'll refresh my memory on that. I'm supposed to

get a muscle biopsy done, but - even if enzymes etc were abnormal - it

doesn't seem like there's any ttmt for it (a kin to mitochondrial

dysfunction, red-ragged fibers, or excess lipids??) The bulk of tests

done by LabCorp. Leaky gut by GSDL. Was it Hyde in Canada that had

some success with Immunovir? Saw first small study but nothing after

that (could be I missed it).

No - not a tease - not sure why one would get that impression. Not

promoting anything - just trying to gain/refresh some knowledge/lost

memory

Thanks again,

Lance

Dr. Teitelbaum writes that most serum testosterone tests are of limited

value. Serum cortisol is also very unreliable. Most people with subclinical

adrenal insufficiency (including me) will have normal serum cortisol levels.

Thanks again for the help Blake.

I'll pursue the salivary testing, and more. To your earlier comments,

I have tried several, but not exhaustive strict elimination diets,

including diary, wheat, gluten and others I've forgotten. I don't

drink coffee, and very rarely eat chocolate. For 3 months. No change.

Maybe not long enough. One thing I _do_ notice with diet - and there

seems to be a handful of us around - that when I eat whole protein, it

is very similar to aerobic exertion --> marked relapse. It very likely

has played a role in my lean muscle wasting (but am unsure what to do

about it). As much as possible, I try to eat organic. I do get

salt/salty food cravings, when I succumb to about every 10 days.

I have tried several FOS probiotics - felt sicker taking them - and

Betaine HCL, but will give it a go again (and I probably did not stay

on them long enough). One search showed colostrum seems to help some

with leaky gut.

I've taken high doses of (the Cheney recommended form) Vit B12, but

have not IM, and should probably do so.

I've been tested for heavy metal twice, IIRC, once by serum and once

by hair (nominal levels). I haven't had my mecury amalgams replaced.

Also, my body temp is consistently 96.0 or 96.1 F. I've had several

(senstive) Thryoid panels done - all normal - but I should dblck that

the best methodoly is being used.

Rgds,

Lance

Lance,

Arabinogalactins from the larch tree are a great prebiotic.

CFS people regularly react to both natural and un-natural chemicals,

including salicylates, preservatives, glutamate, amines, nitrates,

tartrazine.

I recommend people with CFS eat plenty of salt, sea salt is ideal. There

needs are usually greatly increased. Hair analysis often shows low sodium

levels.

Pepsin is the enzyme essential for protein digestion/absorption. This is

often compounded with Hcl.

It sounds like you have adrenal insufficiency for sure, as do 2/3 of CFS

cases. This also causes low body temperature, weight loss, fatigue, food

sensitivities, etc. See the following symptoms/sign list and other pages on

Dr. Rind's site:

http://www.drrind.com/scorecardmatrix.asp

The best thyroid panel is offered by Great Smokies Diagnostic Laboratory:

http://www.gsdl.com/

Thank you Blake. It's certainly worth having my thyroid retested, and

it looks like GSDL offers an adreno/cortex test, too.

These were both interesting on Dr. Rinds site

It hard to know what to treat first, infections, metabolic
