Re: I also have cataracts in both eyes

Mercola.com newsletter recently featured info that when the vitreous

gel of the eye deteriorates, it allows oxygen across the lens,

oxidizing the lens and that can lead to cataracts.

This certainly makes sense to me as hyperbaric oxygen, though

immensely helpful to me, has affected my eyes. I have gotten some

floaters which are bits of vitreous gel, and I have some light

scattering and glare (early precursors to cataracts). OTOH because

the rest of the eye and the retina love oxygen, treatments have

improved the clarity of my vision so it is a weird paradox, worse and

better. But the lens probably won't; recover from being flooded

dwith oxygen. But anyway, I suspect that the vitreous deteroriates

because of infection in the eye, in my case spirochetes, but i

suspect viruses could do it also.

" DITTO " I'm also 56, have cateracts in both eyes, as well as excessive

floaters. I don't recall this in the CFS/FM literature, - is it possible we have

inadvertently stumbled on another symptom for CFS? ~ mike, terre haute,

Joyce and ,

Free radical damage is thought to be a factor in many cases of cataracts.

This lends support to what Rich and I have been saying on this board for

some time, namely that impaired ability to quench free radicals is a major

part of the development of these syndromes.

Could you please tell us what the symptoms of cataracts are? I am 58 and

have noticed some distortion of vision at times.

Mine are new and not too bad; what I notice is when I am outside and come in, I

have spots in my vision for a while. My brother in law had pretty bad ones from

diabetes; he thought he was color blind but when they corrected the cataracts he

saw colors normally. So they can make everything yellow'ish also.

Vision problems also seem common in PWC's but seem more related to not being

able to focus, or difficulty reading especially high contrast things. Sometimes

I have both of these problems too but I do not think they are the cataracts.

I would have agreed with you. But when my doctor found my cataracts at 37, he

was very surprised and asked if I had a family history of " early " cataracts. I

said I didn't think so, that my mom had cataract surgery but she was 60. He

said that was " early " . So I guess people don't normally get them until their

70's and 80's, unless they have something like diabetes or perhaps other chronic

illnesses which deplete antioxidants.

By the way, someone asked about surgery. My brother in law had his lenses

replaced. They set one eye to focus close and one far (like they sometimes do

with contacts.) They weren't sure how he would do because he has had so much

eye degradation due to diabetic retinopathy, but he still feels the cataracts

surgery made a huge difference in his vision. My doc told me they are working

on replacement lenses that you will be able to focus with. I hope this is

around by the time my vision gets very bad, because I don't think a CFS brain

can deal with processing different vision from two eyes. At least mine CFS

brain!
