What is Protein S def

Protien S deficiency is one of the rarer coagulation defects. Protein

S is used in processing vitamin K (which is used to stop bleeding

wounds). A defiencey means too much vitamin K hence one type of

coagulation.

When I revisited what Protien S was, I realized from reading

http://www.protein.org.uk/, a site only for those with Protien S

deficiency that she had a choice: taken coumadin OR cut her vitamin K

intake. She does not want to take coumadin for various reasons --- I

prefer her not to take it because it is a drug that requires constant

monitoring with complex interactions.

She had been a " good girl " and eating lots of organic greens -- very

rich in Vitamin K. She stopped doing so and noticed a major jump of

energy in 2 days that persisted. She will eat a little greens still --

but watches the vitamin K content closely (she prefers not too, she

loves greens -- but prefers energy and avoiding coumadin more!).

It is an example of the benefit of identifying the coagulation defect

that is involved in CFIDS.... We currently know how to detect some

85% of the defects causing coagulation (so it is possible to be

tested and get a " no-defect found " report -- and have a defect).

For a list of them:

http://www.lassesen.com/cfids/coagulation.htm

and

http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/415086_1 (free registration)

Each defect means a different course of action (what you should be

taking, what you should not be taking).

On the other hand, if you are good in keeping daily logs with some

object measurements.... you can do things like: No vitamin-K foods

for a week (this also means no MULTI-Vitamins for a week, since they

usually contain K); and see if you improve. Then try Red Rice Yeast

for a week. Then try a baby aspirin with each meal for a week etc.

It means that you (or significant others) must make observations and

keeping your environment stable for the week.
