I especially haven't had much luck with anything in a pill. For this information, go to www.houstonni.com and call the toll free number. Devin will be able to explain these in detail. > 2. Is there any emerging profile of typical positive or negative > responders to enzyme supplementation (eg. constellation of symptoms). > In the summary report, this profile was emerging, however, it is still pretty loose. You won't know exactly until you try a product, but maybe this will help. Also, you can bring up any specific concerns with Devin. Who May Benefit from Peptizyde and Zyme Prime 1. The general information on taking digestive enzymes is that anyone over the age of 35 needs to supplement their natural digestive enzymes because your body naturally makes less as you get older. Many spouses and other family members have tried these " since they were there, " and are reporting good results for overall digestion. 2. Some mothers on the board, about 15-20, say that taking these products regularly is helping their other autoimmune conditions. These include chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, allergies, asthma, and migraines. Strong proteases such as Peptizyde are known to help with immune system support and pain relief. 3. The person who is " allergic " or " reacts " to " everything. " There were significantly positive results from parents who have found they needed to keep removing more and more foods from the diet. So those who are GFCF, soy-free, corn-free, phenol-free, tomato-free, egg- free, etc. are excellent candidates for success. Or if you start a restrictive diet and find you now need to keep removing more and more foods. This is probably because there is a baseline gut/digestion problem in contrast to a true allergic reaction to specific foods. 4. Those who have test results of foods based on an IgG reaction are likely to see good results with enzymes, because these reactions are usually caused by the body responding to an insufficiently digested protein (the protein is too large and the body sees it as an intruder). Those who react to foods based on an IgE reaction should be more cautious in using enzymes to re-introduce a particular food. These are generally not based on food proteins, although they might be. Also, you may see an improved response or less reaction to an IgE based allergy with enzymes because better digestion enables the body to fight off the invading substance more effectively – a roundabout way of improving. So, the " intolerance/sensitivity " reactions are helped greatly by enzymes, whereas the " true allergy " reactions are only mildly helped, if at all. See these links for a better description (they are short): http://www.cyberdiet.com/modules/aa/under/definitions/allergy. html http://www.cyberdiet.com/modules/aa/under/definitions/immune_s ystem.html http://www.cyberdiet.com/modules/aa/under/definitions/allergic _rxns.html http://www.cyberdiet.com/modules/aa/under/definitions/intolera nce.html 5. Those who are known to be sensitive to casein/gluten/soy and/or have leaky gut and want to consume these foods are overwhelmingly able to consume those foods again without reaction with Peptizyde. There are a few people who were not able to do this, as well as those who chose not to do it. Besides the three cases of celiac, another mother was not able to give dairy again without her child reacting (caused constipation). Overall she decided that not giving dairy worked better than giving the enzymes and treating the constipation. Others have seen some constipation and decided to give the dairy+enzymes and treat the constipation by other methods. 6. Those that respond well to the GFCF or other restrictive diet have also responded well to Peptizyde and Zyme Prime. This includes those that remained on a restrictive diet with enzymes as well as those that left a restrictive diet with enzymes. 7. Those that have known malabsorption, digestion, or bowel problems respond well with these enzymes. 8. Those with a yeast or bacteria overgrowth. Seven parents reported that their yeast treatment seemed to be much more effective when giving Peptizyde and Zyme Prime at the same time. This was based on the child's reactions and stools. Two parents said their doctor advised to use enzymes (this was over a year ago and so not the Peptizyde brand specifically) with a yeast treatment. One theory is that yeast cells have an outer protein coat that is hard for the medicines to penetrate. A protease can break down this coating and allow the medication inside and act more effectively. Also, enzymes degrade the toxins produced by the yeast and carry off waste and dead cells. 9. Those with mercury toxicity may respond well. Mercury is known to inhibit the enzyme DPP IV which is the enzyme that breaks down casein among other things. Peptizyde contains the highest amount of actual DPP IV of any enzyme product. Supplementing this enzyme directly may help to override some of the adverse effects of mercury toxicity until the mercury can be eliminated from the body. Additional Comments 1. For those that did not see any reaction, positive or negative, after doing the GFCF diet and want to know if giving Peptizyde will help: There are a few parents on the board in this situation. After 2- 3 months with enzymes, a few parents continue to see no results, positive or negative. Four parents say they think there is some small improvement and want to give it more time. Three parents report seeing positive results with enzymes although they had seen none with the diet. Since parents are advised to give the GFCF diet a year, especially since gluten takes so long to leave the system, you could also conclude that Peptizyde should be tried regularly for a year before deciding conclusively. Peptizyde may be easier and cheaper than the diet for this time, or used in conjunction with it. At this point, it is not known to what extent age factors into this. However, the younger the child, the more likely it was that enzymes would help where the diet did not. Besides these cases, more people and/or time will be needed to reach a better conclusion. 2. For those that tried the GFCF, but could not maintain it for whatever reason: The parents in this situation say that Peptizyde is much more convenient and thorough in terms of keeping the body free of any unwanted casein/gluten peptides. About a dozen people mentioned having trouble with other relatives not adhering to their chosen restrictive diet, and so they give Peptizyde to assist with those times. Several people found the diet very difficult with an older or school-age child and the enzymes assist when they are at school or on their own. 3. For those wondering that if they see improvement with enzymes, should they even bother with attempting a restrictive diet: Several parents have found that the enzymes do not help a particular child with all foods. When using the enzymes, know that you may still have to look for certain foods that an individual may react to. Besides peanuts, gluten for celiacs, and phenol load, there have been a couple reported cases of problems with some types of oils. Corn oil can contain sulfite residues, so this may need to be eliminated as well as other sulfites. The possible need to eliminate other foods while using enzymes needs to be evaluated on a case-by-case and food- by-food basis as always. > 3. What is the difference between Houston Nutriceuticals products and others on the market? > Peptizyde contains the highest amount of the enzyme DPP IV of any enzyme product. this is the enzyme which cleaves the casein/dairy protein. Besides this enzyme, it is formulated with 2 other ingredients which together give it a synergistic effect making it very effective. Peptizyde is designed specifically for the problems in ASD with the dairy/gluten peptides. It is used either with or without casein/gluten foods whereas other products are recommended to be used ONLY with GFCF foods by their manufacturers. Zyme Prime is a pretty strong all purpose across the board product. There are a few other similar products available. These two are also much less expensive that other products and are proving to be extrememly effective.
