Re: Reactions to Supplements/Mouthing

My older son's reaction starts with him being much more whiney,

anxious, and verbally argumentative. He gets a high pitch wail like a

wounded animal, he bounces his head more (stim) and wants to chew

things. Younger son's reaction is usually sullen and he gets bowel

problems. For the chewing/mouthing, I usually have to find the

troubling food/supplement and remove it. some sensory integration

techniques also help this. Many people recommend letting them chew on

a strip of plastic tubing, or doing " heavy work " to calm their

system. I get the " chewies " when taking in too many sensory stuff. It

usually correlates with a headache/anxiety feeling. Heavy work does

help me (sweeping, mowing the lawn, lifting things, pushing-pulling

things). For my son we send him out to the swingset to climg, or take

him to Mcs because they have those elaborate climbing tupes.

Just my own personal opinion, I would not use chew tubing, even tho

most OTs do recommend it for this behavior. This is for several

reasons --

1. Redirecting the chewing to something else which is socially

appropriate, like gum, is much preferable. Many AS adults chew their

lips and/or tongue.

2. You will want to wean the child off the tube eventually, to

something more appropriate or to end the behavior altogether, so why

introduce something that you won't want later?

3. I do not like treating a child like a dog. In my opinion it

contributes to the lousy treatment of AS children, and all children

who are different, considering them as lesser humans and even as

non-humans, unworthy of basic respect as human beings.

Dana,

My 6yo son also mouths objects *a lot*. He has always done this so

it's hard for me to say if it has increased, but he does seem to have

a toy or something in his mouth all the time. If I ask him to take

it out, he does immediately, but it is back in his mouth within 10

seconds. If this is regression, he has *improved* in so many areas

since starting the enzymes and treating for yeast, that he would

definitely be regressing as well as improving (does that make sense?).

Anyway, here are the supplements he is on. Do you think one of these

could be the culprit?

Elyte (electrolytes)

TMG

Folic Acid

Biotin

P5P (not SNT)

Cod Liver Oil

Evening Primrose Oil

Sunflower Oil

Flax Oil

Various probiotics

Enzymes (pep and zp)

Epsom Salt baths about 3X/week

Thanks for any insight.

God Bless,

Sally

ps. I absolutely agree with you regarding vaccination *choice*!

Yes, at least to me it does.

I can give you my experience with my son only, and info on what I have

heard from others. No guarantees that this is for your son also, my

kids react to basically everything, and still most supplements even

with enzymes. Your best option would be either to eliminate all of

them and re-introduce one at a time, or eliminate one at a time and

see if the behavior reduces, but if more than one are causing it, then

that makes it hard.

major negative reaction

> Folic Acid -- seems okay for my son

> Biotin -- don't know about this one

> P5P (not SNT) -- nasty for phenol issues

> Cod Liver Oil -- major reactions to this one, but not so bad as TMG

> Evening Primrose Oil -- constipation

> Sunflower Oil -- reaction, not too bad, but still there

> Flax Oil -- major reactions to this one, but not so bad as TMG

> Various probiotics -- major reactions to every probiotic I ever

tried

> Enzymes (pep and zp) -- the best supplement I have ever tried, made

my autistic son NT, some kids go hyper on the Pep tho

> Epsom Salt baths about 3X/week -- I have never used this one, but I

did post that for someone [maybe you? I don't remember now] this

might be a contributing factor

Mouthing can very easily be a sign of nutritional deficiency. (We seen this

in PICA, which has been found in children who are on the Gluten Casein free

diet and remain unsupported. As as you may know, removing these proteins

nutrionally depletes our children). Yeast presence is a sure sign of lack of

intestinal support where absorption of nutients takes place. So even if on

enzymes you still need to increase your childs assimilation ability further.

Enzymes, high-grade probiotics- (please know there are 200 different strains

of acidophilus), and whole food. The AFA strain of the blue green algae has

the widest range of nutritonal support on this planet. It is not

manufactured by a lab and it is not extracted from multiple food sources. It

is however tested for quality assurance. No metals, bacteria, pesticides,

etc. and water ph is tested every 15 minutes. If your child is mouthing and

he has yeast, My suggestion would be the nutritional support. This is NOT

uncommon. Email me privately if you would like me to mail you literature on

this)....Joni M. RN
