I had to get off it, and went on Ativan (lorazapam). No more gut problems. I just saw Dr. Cheney, and he says Ativan is the second drug of choice after Klonopin. Jackie P.S. I take 1 1/2 mg at breakfast, 1 mg at lunch, 1 mg at dinner, and 1/2 mg at bedtime, with 2 Valerian (Gaia brand), and am now starting on magnesium sulfate/taurine shots, per Cheney. Jackie, Thanks a million for the info. That's just the kind of thing I wanted to hear (i.e. what is considered to be second best to clonazepam by Cheney). i've taken ativan before, a long time back. As I recall the pills are very small, unlike clonazepam tablets which are quite large. > P.S. You take your biggest dose in the morning! Is that right or was it a typo? -- Hud

What I found, was that for me, Ativan increased my energy! It actually made me feel better. So I increased the morning dosage, where my energy was lowest. You gotta experiment, to get max sleep benefit as well. Jackie P. S. I forget if I mentioned that I also take 2 Valerian (by Gaia) for sleep. But tell me how the ativan compares to any other benzodiazepines youy may have taken (clonazepam, diazepam, alprazolam...). I'm going to give Ativan a try instead of the clonazepam b/c of gut problems. Hud

Hi michelle, low dose klonopin or other benzos help during the day to increase alertness by reducing the sensitivity of a particular receptor in the brain (the NMDA receptor) which has been found to be 'hypersensitive' in PWC and is believed to be a central feature of the pathophysiological process in CFS. YOU CAN find lots of info about this in past posts. I've tried modafinil (provigil). Not a good drug in general for PWC, from what I've read. Not a good drug for many persons with narcolepsy either, for which it was given FDA approval. But for some it apparently helps to increase alertness without having the 'motor' stimulant quality of amphetamine and ritalin type drugs. modafinil seems to cause bad headaches in a rather large percentage of users-- far larger than the pharm. company acknowledges in their package insert. -- Hud (8 >{D) hudr@... Klonopin acts pretty much in the opposite manner which helps explain its neuroprotective effects. you said you may have felt more tired on the provigil? that would make sense b/c it might cause the nmda receptor to overfire even more than it does 'normally' in the CFIDS brain. I think goldstein uses provigil to 'antidote' ketamine, which is an nmda antagonist (and like klonopin is neuroprotective and also increases alertness in small doses). -- Hud (8 >{D) hudr@...
