TMG instead of sam-e?

Was reading up a bit on sam-e and found this from an article by a Dr.

Podell:

" Fortunately, there is a simple, inexpensive way to stimulate the

body to make SAMe on its own: a combination of three old fashioned

vitamins (folic acid, vitamin B12 and Vitamin B6) together with TMG,

another nutritional supplement. "

That's certainly easy enough, and I checked the prices for TMG at

Needs...very inexpensive, whereas sam-e can get quite exorbitant,

depending on dose.

I'm just wondering about peoples' experiences with TMG for

depression/liver toxicity issues/sleep quality etc. and whether it

seems to be effective in lieu of sam-e. Thanks...

> what is TMG please?

Tri methyl glycine (i think?). A methyl donor, and precursor,

apparently, to sam-e.

Had just been looking around the About site a bit and found the

article which cited TMG as an alternative to sam-e:

http://www.energywave.com/nightmar.htm

The About article on sam-e, which has some links to articles and

medline stuff at the end, is at

Hi Elena and

I've been taking SAM-e orally as recommended by my rheumatologist for two

years at about 800 to 1200 mg daily in enteric coated tabs. The brand I took

also contained the nexeccary B vitamins and was significantly cheaper than

most brand.

In August at the recommendation of a researcher on another list, I stopped

SAM-e and began Betaine HCl which is trimethylglycine (TMG) with hydrochloric

acid. Lots of people take it to increase stomach acid not realizing that like

SAM-e, it is a methyl donor.

The only difference I have found with the Betaine is more stomach acid

issues and an increased appetite for fats and sugars.

I'm about to try TMG before switching back to another product by the

company that I've been getting SAM-e from. The new product is all the SAM-e

precursors plus some SAM-e and is about 50% of the price.

I had been paying about $21.00 for 60 200mg enteric coated caps of SAM-e.

The new precursor product is about $11.00 for 60 tabs.

Elena, can you get stuff from the USA?

Hi Elena,

I get my supplements from USA. They send them to me as regular mail but

there is always a risk of getting lost. I did not have much problem in that.

Only one delivery out of 5-6 deliveries were lost.

Take care..

Nil

Hi again. Did a search on TMG and found some insights:

" In the liver, TMG transfers one of its three methyl groups to

homocysteine, which is then converted into the useful amino acid

methionine....NOTE: An inexpensive variety is Betaine HCL which acts

as a stomach acidifier and is not practical due to stomach irritation

at the doses required to enhance methylation metabolism. "

(from http://www.digitalnaturopath.com/treat/T36297.html)

Additionally, I find it interesting that TMG brings down

homocysteine, as I've read that elevated homocysteine promotes the

formation of blood clots.

Thanks for your replies! Foxhillers, I'd love to hear about your

experience with TMG/Sam-e precursors when you try them, on list or

backchannel.

<<what is your program for taking Tmg, B12 & B6 to get the same

results from

taking Same?>>

I don't have one...I'd just read that TMG could have the same effects

as Sam-e, and posted wondering if anyone had experience with that.

I've ordered some TMG and such and plan on experimenting with it a

bit myself.

Another list member had mentioned a product of Sam-e precursors

(though I'm not sure that TMG is a precursor with further reading

I've done. It's possible that the methyl-donor action of TMG could

be similar though). I think it's a bit of sam-e combined with TMG, b

vitamins, etc. with the theory that it could be an inexpensive

alternative. Whether that idea applies--we'll see. (hope so).
