Where do you buy the tea? My son takes anything I give him... so far, only 8

months into it, but he is constipated a lot. I have tried lots of stuff, but

it seems to happen a least once a week Thanks!

I'm getting quite a bit frustrated at this point. We have been GFCF for

nearly a year and on enzymes for nearly two months (1 pep and 1 ZP with

all meals and snacks). In addition we were using probiotics and Ojibwa

tea. With all of those combined we had stellar results. Unbelievably

great behavior, well formed B.M.s every day. However my son hated the

tea (1 Tbsp per day) and fought me on it every day.

When we stopped the tea, things fell apart. Constipation and encopresis

returned, behavior plummeted. We changed probiotics to ProBio Gold but

nothing improved and he started having wetting accidents. We switched to

2 Culturelle a day and encopresis has stopped, but he's still

constipated and wetting. I added in 2 Rhino Calciums a day (250mg

calcium 125 mg magnesium total) but no improvement.

We were on vacation for a week and a half and living out of hotels the

whole time. The diet became impossible. For the first time in a year I

allowed him to have 3 non-gfcf meals (with enzymes). I can't tell if the

enzymes helped or not since things have been going poorly anyway. My son

does not have immediate reactions to anything. It seems to build up over

time. He's having a B.M. every 4-5 days and his behavior gets worse

every day until he has one, then we start the cycle again.

The bummer was we were in Disneyland during the course of this last

cycle. For months all he has wanted to do was go to California

Adventure, so we went. He was fine in the lines and fine in the

attractions, but every moment in between he was whining, crying,

arguing, and saying he wanted to go home. Pretty much ruined it for

everyone.

I wish I understood what the tea was doing and find a way to achieve the

same effect. I've seen him have NT days and want to get back there, just

can't figure out how.

One thought was maybe the tea acted as a natural anti-fungal. I know

Nystatin needs a prescription, but how is it administered? I'm already

putting so much powder in his drinks it's amazing he hasn't fought me on

this yet.

I just can't figure out where to go from here. If anyone has

suggestions, please let me know.

Thanks.

It sounds like your instinct is right-- the tea was doing something

for him. Can he swallow a pill? Our son is currently on nystatin in

a pill form-- twice a day for 30 days. Avoid the sugary syrup

nystatin.

Can you afford naturopathic healthcare? There are some naturopaths

out there that specialize in autism-- also nutritionists... they may

be of great help to you.

Some probiotics don't seem the same as others... I don't know about

your brand, but I know they vary in that you want it to stay

refrigerated through the shipping to get the maximum potency. We buy

ours directly from our naturopath-- UltraFlora Plus-- and they are

always refrigerated. If you can't get refrigerated-- you definitely

want to at least buy them " fresh " -- not off of a store shelf where

you don't know how long they've been sitting there. Online ordering

would be your best bet.

We don't do the GFCF diet-- my son has sensory issues, but not

autism. I can't imagine doing the GFCF diet! I feel for people who

have to do it-- what an undertaking! Bless them!

I would suggest going back to your original formula... giving him

lots of that tea, even more than he was originally on, to see if the

tea IS the key for him. There is also a supplement called L-

glutamine which can help heal the gut if there is indeed

inflammation. It promotes healthy tissue growth in the gut.

Follow your instincts and resume your old regimen, with the same

exact products! Moms (and dads) know best!

Oh , your post contains good news and bad news, hope and

frustration. I just wish the good stuff would " stick " and you could

go on. It sounds as if you had a good system. We have a good system

now, but at the moment whenever I vary it, we have problems (like

easing off on the Zoloft or Culturelle).

I have heard good things about the tea but wondered how I would get

it down my kids as well. Does it have to be dissolved in tea form?

Could you put the powder in something more solid like the all-purpose

applesauce?

If the tea has antifungal properties and you saw good things with the

Culturelle, maybe it is a gut overgrowth. Yesterday I bought some

grapefruit seed extract for my youngest (not grape seed extract).

This is supposed to have antifungal properties and be effective. Our

ped isn't keen on doing a yeast test and my son still has a bathroom

problem, although with the Culturelle 3 times a day and enzymes the

smell is very reduced. We are in month 2 of 6 of the encopresis

treatment and he is doing much better with extra glasses of pure

water and me reminding him to " try " several times each day. But if I

let up even a little bit, he get constipated/diarrhea right away. So

I am hoping the GSE will help this a bit. I also give him some of the

Natural Calm magnesium to drink. Mag loosens stools, calcium promotes

constipation. Getting him to go once a day would help your some a lot

because it is pretty painful to only be going every 4-5 days.

Bummer...and with school starting up.

Keep in touch.

Our children need to have assimilation addressed. We can give them products

but unless they have the ability to absorb those products, and rid the

binders, fillers and isolates that may accompany those products,we may

" think " they are getting the full benefit of products we are administering

when actually they are not. Joni

I buy the tea from http://www.ojibwatea.com . , the tealady is

very helpful and genuinely concerned. You have to brew the tea, let it

sit overnight then bring it to a boil and strain. I make about a quart

at a time. You work your way up to about 1 Tbsp. per day for a child.

It needs to be given on an empty stomach and 1 1/2 hours away from any

supplements (Which is a hard order to fill). The tea alone did not fix

things. It worked in concert with the probiotics, and when we added the

enzymes is when things really got good. I thought the taste was mild

and somewhat woody, but my son hated it so much, it was the only

supplement that he resisted intensely.

Occasionally I think maybe he needs something like Zoloft, but I really

want to try the non-pharmaceutical route first.

It needs to be brewed and you only give a small amount. I don't know

why my son resists it so much considering all the other nasty tasting

stuff he takes. You're not supposed to mix it with anything, but

perhaps I need to try some juice to make it palatable.

Where do you get this and what form is it in?

So you give magnesium without calcium? I thought they were supposed to

be given together in a 2:1 ratio? Does natural calm need to be given

with food? What do you mix it with?

I get him to try every night, but some nights he resists and you just

can't force a kids to go.

The body has over approx. 1000 enzymes which are needed for

homeostasis.Enzymes are catalysts and needed for chemical reactions to occur

in the body.Every organ is dependant on enzymes. Our body needs enzymes, but

our body needs to also be able to absorb enzymes. Because many of us are

enzyme deficient, our body tries to compensate by over-producing

hydrochloric acid. This is why antacids are the number one prescription

medication in the country. We have about 40 different " GOOD " bacteria that

is needed in ou intestinal tract to perform optimally. The intestinal tract

is responsible for absorbing nutrients, ridding toxins, and making vit B12

which is necessary to enhance the immune system. Enzymes and probiotics are

vital. Know that soy isolates are known enzyme inhibitors. Fermented or

sprouted soy are your better sources. Also know that there are approximately

200 strains of acidophilus so make sure you have a hi-grade acidophilus. The

good bacteria in our body is so easily destroyed. When we lack enzymes and

are missing probiotics, the intestinal tract has undigested food that sits

on the intestinal lining. Cant absorb or rid toxins like it was meant to.

the little blood cells that run along side of the wall absorb this waste and

travel through every organ in the body. Some may have heard the word " leaky

gut syndrome " . When our intestinal tract doesnt have the enviroment that is

needed, ph levels drop, yeast overgrows, vit b12 is not produced and stress

is put on the kidneys and liver. Nutrients are not absorbed and toxins are

not removed. Supporting the body with plant based enzymes, hi-grade

probiotics and organic whole food has proven to be very successful with many

children including my own. This is why I have coordinated a research project

within the autistic community to have the scientific data to support the

testimonials. Taking vitamins from extracted food sources does not give the

full synergistic balance and have all needed co-factors. Too much

phosphorous depletes zinc. Too much calcium depletes zinc. Too much

magnesium depletes calcium. Too much zinc depletes copper and Iron. Too much

vit C depletes Vit B12. People arent even aware that vit K is needed for

calcium absorption so green leafy vegetables are a better source. I give my

sons the Aphanizomenon Flos-Aquae strain of algae. This is an organic whole

food, and has natural enzymatic properties. It also has all the essential

fatty acids, minerals, nutrients and vitamins,in a natural balanced state,

by mother nature herself. Nothing has been extracted. When we take vitamins

and minerals separately, our bodies are not able to recognize them as " food "

and therefore are not used as well. Dr. Strickland did a study on Vit B12

absorption. Standard vitamins had 5-10 absorption, organic vitamin and

mineral supplements were extremely variable. They were as low as 10 % and as

high as 50%, but never higher than that fifty. Store bought algae came in at

50 percent, and the Algae that was flash-freezed during harvesting was

97%.Any child with constipation has a definite digestive problem. This gets

into a whole cycle of enzyme deficiency, overgrowth of yeast, poor

assimilation, lowered ph, decrease immune system and a decrease ability to

remove toxins. Bowel movements should actually occur more than once a day,

and at the very least every 24 hours. Supporting the body with enzymes,

probiotics, and organic whole food has proven to be very successful for us

here.

Hello,

I just read your post... very interesting. What is

Aphanizomenon Flos-Aquae? And how does under

production of stomach acid or stomach acid with the

wrong PH play into this?
