PRELIMINARY STUDY OF TRANSFER FACTOR (TF) IN PATIENTS WITH FIBROMYALGIA (FM),

CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME (CFS) AND CONCOMITTANT LYME BORRELIOSIS

J.A. Whitaker, MD*, M.H. Dopson, L.H. Mattman, PhD, and D.N. Reifsnyder, MD

The present study concerns two enigmatic diseases: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

(CFS) and Fibromyalgia (FM). Fourteen CFS and eight FM cases previously

diagnosed were chosen after careful review of symptomatology. The participants

in both CFS and FM groups exhibited bacterial and/or viral infections.

Evaluation of the FM group consisted of monitoring the autonomic nervous system

with Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and documenting hematological parameters

including live-cell blood analysis.

Surprisingly, in a preliminary study both diseases showed a high incidence of

infection with Borrelia burgdorferi. Success in producing positive cultures was

initiated by growth in cell-wall deficient stages. Blood cultures were positive

in the 8 CFS and in 15 FM participants, of which 8 were chosen for this

investigation. Urine antigen levels were positive in 4 of 5 FM cases (IGeneX).

There have been reports that Transfer Factor is of value in producing immunity

to Treponema palidum and thus another reason exists for testing Transfer Factors

in CFS and FM. Multispecific Transfer Factors were developed from concentrated

cultures of Borrelia burgdorferi and viral entities, antigens derived from the

blood of patients and Transfer Factors derived from household contacts.
