Penny,

Until Devin jumps in here, my first inclination is to say I would

definitely stop giving him regular food. How long has he been eating

the regular food? Get him back on the diet and then you can reduce

the enzyme dose back to where you were at with no reaction. Once you

reduce the dose, you can determine where the problem is. I would not

introduce the new foods until you've figured out what dose of

enzymes, if any, works for your son. You may even want to stop the

enzymes completely and re-introduce them, one enzyme at a time, at a

low dose.

(In my opinion)

I have not heard of this kind of reaction occuring with enzymes, but

I would advise stopping the enzymes and infractions until things

revert back to normal.

I agree with Dana's assessment that celiac may be a problem here, and

the enzymes are no panacea for something as dangerous as that.

Sorry the little guy is in so much pain, let us know how it goes.

Penny,

I would agree with the others. I give a 7-9 enzymes per day total.

Even though I have not hear of an adverse upper limit does not mean

that your child is not reacting to it. It may also be giving too much

(enzyme and different foods) too fast. I would go back to maybe 1 of

each with each meal, take out the gluten, and start at that point

where he wasn't having any problem. Then add in one food at a time

and wait a few days to see if there is a reaction (possibly a delayed

reaction) to anything just as you would on an elimination diet. It

could be gluten, or maybe particular fruits (phenols) or something

with dyes in it. Some people do have stomach pains with an increase

in enzymes and maybe the dose was too high too fast for him.

If it is celiac, then the enzymes will probably not help with gluten

because that is a different mechanism. The looser bowels would

correlate to increase in enzymes. Also, the enzymes breaking down

stuff can increase amino acids in the urine and acidity, so maybe it

is " stinging " him (this is a reaching guess on my part at this

point). I don't know if there is the possibility of a urinary tract

infection. I wouldn't panick that the enzymes aren't working at all

or that you can re-introduce some foods eventually, but back up to a

point and keep a better eye on things may give some better clues.

Sorry he is having problems. How long have you been giving the

regular foods and do you know of any other problem foods besides

casein/gluten?

Yesterday I was giving one of each every 90 minutes so he could eat

whenever. Yesterday I probably gave him 7 of each. The other

strange thing is, he seems to have an ongoing erection. He has to

rub himself constantly and he's screaming out like he's in pain. He

has had bowel movements every night. They are looser than usual. So

have I given him too many enzymes or is it the food that's effecting

him. I can't stand to see him suffering like this. Please give me

some suggestions.

Penny,

The urinary stuff you mention is something that several parents

reported on the abmd list when Serenaid first came out, and this was

without dietary infractions. No one ever knew why some of the kids

responded this way to Serenaid, but it was a topic for a few weeks.

When the parents discontinued the Serenaid, the problem went away, so

they were sure it was that particular enzyme product. I don't know

what Serenaid and the Houstin enzymes have in common, but there might

be a clue in comparing them to see what is causing some of the kids to

have these symptoms.

Yes, Devin said that each peptide bond broken will release a molecule

of water, and others have reported increased wetting when starting

enzymes. Usually the body adjusts in a week or two. I think 's

son took the longest to adjust but now he is fine. Reducing the dose

and " new " foods back to where it was would be a good idea and then

trying again slowly. We are now at 7-9 enzymes/day but on thinking

about it, we started slower. 1 per day, then 3 per day for 2 weeks,

then added the Zyme at 3 per day for two weeks, then added the extra

Peps inbetween meals. So it was built up over about 5-6 week period.

My younger son did have loose stools for the first two days and then

was fine.

I want to go through the abmd archives and see what the SerenAid

posts were about. And see if there was any time table for this.

It will take you forever to go through the archives. It would be much

faster to just post an inquiry to the list asking for those parents

whose children had problems with urination while on Serenaid to

contact you. They are all still members of the list.

We used kirkman's cranberry extract (1 capsule at night) for Adam

when he had had painful urination. This basically eliminated the

crying, screaming, grabbing his diaper, etc. associated with what

I now believe to be a urinary tract infection.

Dennis,

Thanks for that. How long did it take to clear up the infection and

how do you think he got it? I saw cranberry extract in the health

food store so Penny could try it immediately if it might work.

We gave it to him at night with his melatonin and

it seemed to work almost instantly. He slept well

that night and the next day he was doing much better.

You could also get it from a health food store.
