I really appreciated the posts from and Jo (vogel?) on

Dec 29, in reply to my post on being prescribed Quercetin for anti-

histaminic use, since I no longer can tolerate Benadryl.

I think when I wrote I was wise enough to be sanguine about the very

intial relief from the severe increase in pain I'd been experiencing

for a while, and which we had some reason to think might have been

histamine mediated.

I haven't written since because I got VERY big time sick on day 2,

though I can't say for sure it was the Quercetin--but I'm off it for

now until I can rethink, look at notes, talk to my doc, get other

feedback, and simply " recover " myself.

reported increased pain while on it (4 caps / day) for about a

year, with a decrease in pain when she stopped it a few weeks ago,

though other symptoms, which it might have been effective against,

worsened. (A familiar story!) And given what she thought was the

explanation has gone back on it once per day and see if it helps

without hurting.

Jo is taking another bioflavinoid, Hesperiden, and report the Q

didn't work as well for her, but reported crampyiness with H if not

taken with food.

Here's what happened:

Day 1 I took 2 caps of Q 350 mgs. I don't remember if I took it with

food. I don't remember any ill effect and noticed a huge DECREASE in

pain.

Day 2 I took 4 or 5 caps. But before I took the full amount my pain

returned full force, maybe worse, dunno. But my neck went into

spasm, a reaction I've gotten very specifically to certain things,

like grapefruit (the only citrus I've dared try in years) and Ben

Gay, which helps my pain lots, and I had to stop. For, neck spasms,

aside from the discomfort, cause the rest of the body to get tense

and in me ALWAYS produce a migraine.

By the end of the day I was full of pain and a migraine was well

established. And I was exhausted. So exhausted I couldn't make

dinner and had to get into bed. But was hungry so ate a chocolate

muffin from a local bakery that I often use. I do eat chocolate with

no problem. But there was something I tasted in this muffin that

(don't laugh) made me feel " allergic " and within seconds I started to

get very congested in the throat, and started to fear this was the

beginning of anaphalaxis.

Friday night, snowstorm coming, me in pain and exhaustion. I

couldn't face an emergency room or just the getting there. I took

maybe too much baking soda, which docs have told me will break an

histaminic allergic response. I have an EpiPen but never used it and

was afraid of all that epinephrine, as my heart was racing from I

guess the fear.

Apparently the baking soda was effective, but whatever the congestion

was broken. I got very nauseated and upchucked (not typical of me)

and that gave me additional relief.

That of course wore me out further.

I had to cancel all plans. I've cut back on all but the safest

foods. No Q of course and I'm gonna try to look at my diary, which I

realize should be kept more neatly for situations like this to make

info retrieval easier.

And hopefully my overly busy doc will have some time to give me by

phone Tuesday or Wednesday.

I am of course still in a lot of pain, have been able to do little.

AnAm trying to drink a lot. And, again, keeping my diet simple:

meat, rice, broccoli and a few other things I've not felt to be an

issue. I've cut out wheat for the nonce. I've been eating it for a

long time, but about 2 months ago I stopped. I felt no better and

after 2 months went back on it.

The first few days I had no additional problems. The confusing thing

is that the reaction occurred only several days after wheat was re-

introduced, though up till that day I was eating only one fairly

simple form of it. I don't think if wheat caused the allergic

response it would have kicked in on the third or fourth day after

reintroducing it (coincident with the muffin). But who knows.

This post has whalloped me. I can't write anymore. But if anyone

has any info that they feel could help, please do so. Otherwisem, I

do think I'm doing the wise thing and hope my doc can help further.

Thanks.

Judith

Judith,

Some of the things that I'm allergic to have delayed allergic reactions. For

example, Amoxicillin, the antibiotic, makes me break out in hives on the

fourth or fifth day of using it. Some foods I may have an allergic reaction

to within minutes or hours, and at other times, the same foods may be four

or five days after ingesting them. It makes it really tricky to try to track

down an allergy. Having an allergic reaction 48 hours seems to be the most

common amount of time for me.
