Guest guest
Our Ped told us that a child should have about 50 words at age 18 months. That's a median benchmark, which is a fancy way of saying that half of the kids at that age will have more language and half will have less. He advised us to start making note at that point, and track development beyond then. When our Taryn still had no language at 30 months was when he started pushing the panic button. You are right to be concerned, given your history already. Give it 2-3 more months and see if anything begins to develop. Tim [ ] COMPLETELY OFF TOPIC I'm starting to get a little worried about Toby. Can someone tell me about what age a typical baby will say their first words? How many words should a 15 month old say? I'm feeling a little bad about not remembering this. I was an EXPERT when Logan was this age, but my memory has gone bye-bye and most of my energy goes into autism. I THINK I remember Logan having 3 or 4 words at 11-12 months (and he's non-verbal now). I'm sorry for asking this here, but I haven't been able to find any of my books about this. Anyone with any thoughts? worried mom, Kaye
Guest guest
I will be disagreeable here LOL [story of my life huh?] I think the developmental milestones/benchmarks are generally bullsh*t. [Altho I will say that I believe the ones I read indicated pointing and pre-verbal behavior at 15 months, with the first words at 18-20 months.] My oldest son did not say his first word until age 2-1/2. He is age 7 now and reading at what is generally considered the 3rd grade level. Not only does he have language, I cannot get him to shut up LOL. TWO of my children were not even walking at 15 months [they waited until 16 months], the other two walked at 14 months. So I believe all children are different. And I HATE when parents are made to worry about their kids when they don't meet the " experts " definition of milestones. However, because your older child is autistic [or whatever dx on spectrum], then you are right to be watching him. Does he have any other indicators of delays, for example does he have behaviors or lack of play or something like that? But if you are concerned, and you believe your older son is autistic because of a metals/vaccine connection, then you should consider not vaccinating your child any more, or wait until he is much older. Here is my vaccine information, if you are interested. http://home.pacbell.net/cscomp/parentin.htm#vaccines
Guest guest
Dana, I would agree with your assessment of " experts " (so, you really aren't disagreeable in my opinion, LOL). My son was very happy in a regular private pre-school until I followed the advice of an " expert " who said he belonged somewhere else. Soon after, we removed our son from his wonderful pre-school and put him in our district's Early Childhood program. It was a regretful decision because for him, it was not a good fit. I am the first to recommend looking into Early Childhood programs and have a little training in this area myself, however, I am also one to realize that each child is an individual and should be treated as such. I hate to think of all the time I wasted fretting over my son not being right at all the bazillion milestones they print up in those baby manuals. It has been reported that Einstein talked very little until the age of three or four and he obviously did just fine without any " intervention " . Sowell wrote an excellent book on late talkers I read when trying to solve the mystery of my son's delayed language development. It is called " Late Talking Children " . Here is a link provided by the author where he discusses the book: http://www.tsowell.com/splateta.html. My only concern for the original poster, and I think by your post you are in agreement, is that her older son's delay or lack of language can be attributed to autism and she reported the second child had language, then lost it, which we know can be one of the characteristics of autism. I emphasize CAN BE. This may be meaningless, but if there is a problem, the sooner addressed, the better. He could be suffering from ear infections and may not be hearing well, thus not speaking. He could be uninterested in talking or finds he gets what he needs without having to go to the effort of talking. He could just be thinking about the theory of relativity! > I will be disagreeable here LOL [story of my life huh?] > > I think the developmental milestones/benchmarks are generally > bullsh*t. Guest guest
Wow, count me in on the worry club, here. My almost 17mo girl is babbling a lot but has very few " words " I see consistently. Sometimes 'mama', sometimes 'nana' (banana), sometimes 'dad', and she says 'got' when she's got something she's really pleased about. Let's hope for A LOT of language development soon! Guest guest
Easy? Okay, if thats the case then perhaps I will go try. Are you kidding? I think its great to hear you would help even if you aren't here!! I'm laughing when I say this, but I have an interview tomorrow morning, I don't especially want to grime up my nails or heaven forbid, break one......snicker. just jk'ing now, I am kinda intimidated by this. Here I go. the guys at the auto parts store said it should only take about 15 minutes per pad. hahahaha. The last time they told me it should take me about 30 minutes for my fuel line, and I did that in about an hour and twenty minutes. Thanks for letting me vent my nervousness. Time to hike up my pants and show some guts. Guest guest
Thanks you all for letting me go off-topic and venting. This has been the toughest week for me in a long time, one hell of an emotional roller coaster the last two days and it is making me wonder about a herx. I recently added a herbal combo that is quite intense. ranks right up even with these guys. I am awed by these guys kindness, or for that matter, their thoughtfulness. The flowers given to me after their fixing my car sent me into a blithering sobbing mess. Normally, flowers just don't make me emotional. Woke up yesterday with my eyes swollen shut and a headache from all the crying. I don't like to cry because I used to break out where my tears have fallen. Seems to be okay so far. Oh and the car, stops real nice!!! Its real nice. I think I am on a more even keel today. Someone mentioned paying it forward. I promise. Thursday night I got a phone call. If you are out there, I didn't say what I wanted to say, just so you know. Okay, off to job hunting on the local scene. Thank you all. I ended up attempting to fix those damn brakes three times. Three times was not a charm, as I then had all the right tools and ended up shearing the bolts on the drivers side calipers. At this point I had no choice but to pick the closest shop to me and one that I had seen taking my son home from school. Of course I was bawling, the last straw or the icing on the cake thing, hence bawling. The bolts sheared rather quickly, and I told them my technique of tapping them loose, yadi ya, and they said to try and get it in to them. I did get there without incident, and we talked about how I had done things. They assured me I had done nothing wrong, and were actually quite thrilled I even tried, and that they in the thrity years of doing this had sheared off many bolts. I told them I was not a professional, and I had only sheared off two bolts in my life, and I asked what I had done wrong. They said the only other thing> that I could have done was to apply high heat, obviously out of my capabilities.> > They asked about my situation, and I told them. They took the car at 4:00 yesterday and gave me a ride home. Called me at 8 this morning saying there was enough of the bolts left that they should be able to get them out rather easily. And said they would call when they were done. They called at 11 to pick up my car. They did not charge me a dime, and they ended up replacing not only the pads, but the calipers, and rotors and checked the back brakes as well. They said they were happy I came to them, and that they were in a position to help me. And then, the best part of it all, they gave me flowers for Mother's Day. Hence more bawling.> > Kindness is never forgotten.> > Frito>
