,

I'm 37 and people think I'm in my 20's!!! I tell them I look young

because I exercise (and a little bit of make-up doesn't hurt!!) Though

I have had some hard days at home with the kids that make me feel as

really old and worn out. Oh, if they only came with volume controls...

Kris,

Actually 25 is a great age....Old enough to drink and older enough to know how to do it responsibly while still having fun....Young enough that no one calls you over the hill....Young enough to still have a long life ahead of you so you can make changes if you wish...Old enough to get discounts on car insurance.....and best of all...Young enough to still date college hotties! Yep, 25 is the perfect age, that's why I've been holding there for 8 years!

wrong on the over the hill thing. I'm

indian/latina...my mom's family - the indian side,

harrasses me about marriage. So much so that at my

cousin's wedding last year, my uncle grabbed my hand

and walked me aroudn to meet several 'suitable'

husbands lol

Its kinda annoying - but i'm good at rebelling lol:)

But like like your reasonings for 25!!

You know, turning 30 was hard for me, but 40 was great and becoming 45 is even better. There are parts of getting older I could do without (wrinkles, sags, etc), but the wisdom, more relaxed nature I would never give up.

Yeah mine need volume control as well and maybe a pause button:) Though

my youngest just got over being sick and my son seems to have it now so

its quiet. My other daughter is playing school all day long - she loves

to do that. Mommy can I have a reading lesson, mommy I haven't done my

ballet today, Mommy what about math we haven't done our math yet. Mommy

can we do science/art/history. Good thing I have my wits about me or I

would be floundering lol

I would guess that if I actually put on nice clothes and makeup and did

my hair I could pass for much younger, but I doubt I could do 16

anymore. Truth is the only person who sees me all day are my kids and

its best to wear clothes that can get stained, dirty, painted on as long

as I have them around. Sometimes I change into nice jeans when I take

them places, but even then all people see is your jacket and shoes and I

refuse to wear anything but tennis shoes lol I have paint in my hair now

maybe its shower time lol...

I'm with you on this one, Tonya. Even though I'm 36, I stay at 25

because that's where all the fun seems to be. Once in a while my wife

(who is 38) and I can go out to our favorite bar and dance and have a

good time. (We can even check out other people in their 20's and see

if they're hot :-))

Or I can stay up late on a weekend and have a good time all by myself.

Or I can go to tae kwon do and spar against people who really are in

their 20's (like I did Monday night) and even win sometimes.

Most people seem content to let age catch up with them physically and

mentally. Physically of course we can eat healthy and exercise (which

many in the older generations didn't do). Mentally we don't have to

think of ourselves as old though.

Ok now you really need to borrow a child (under the age of 7) and some

tempera paints and then look at yourself in the mirror when you are

done. Try a fingerpainting or handprint (or footprint) craft. Don't

forget to figure out how to get tempera paint out of your hair and the

child's body (because you knew a mess was going to be made so you

stripped the child first lol) We love doing art but I think half the fun

for the kids is the bath afterwards (they get daily baths but I think

the water turning colors as they wash the paint away is fun in some

strange childlike way)

I let my daughter do my face with those face painting crayons - she had

a great time - so I guess I am a work of art lol

Btw I think I got the paint out - my hair is not dry yet so its hard to

tell.

Welcome Kim! I have a 14 year old son with Asperger's who was diagnosed at age 11. This is a great group to talk about your feeling and problems and also your good times. Again, Welcome! kimguerrette <kguerrette@...> wrote:

Anyway the speech and OT have been helping quite a bit and he has made great gains over the last year. I just now joined this group because it would be nice to talk to some parents who may be in the

same boat I am in. My friends and family are all concerned and understanding, but sometimes I just want to talk about my son to someone going through the very same things. Like a structured routine to the "t" and socks that have to perfect and just not being able to have a conversation with my 5 year old. Thanks for your time,Kim

Welcome, , it sounds like with all those children and their challenges you will be a great source of support to this group. My name is Pat and I am the grandmother of a 13 year old autistic boy. I diagnosed him and have had him every day for the last 10 and a half years. He made great progress with ABA therapy until his mother (my daughter-in-law) put him in the public school. Between the public school, an ignorant psy. M.D. and my bummer son, he has regressed and had periods of aggression. Right now Karac is on .25 mg. of Zanax and is doing better. Karac can swim, ride a bike, a scooter, and shoot and dribble a basketball. He has functional speech and I am using Edmark to teach him to read. I will be 74 next month and I am praying to live long enough to get Karac functioning well enough to live in a group home.

This is a very supportive group; I think you will be a good addition. Pat K

Kim,

I know what you are going through. My son was evaluated by the school district at 3 and was labeled as autistic. I had also been taking him to a pediatric phsyc who said he was ADHD. We didnt get the "official" autism diagnosis until about 5. At 7 he was diagnosed with AS. I always kind of knew even before we got the diagnosis. My son is now 10 years old and is doing remarkably well. He has always been mainstreamed into general education. I have never felt he needed special ed. Just some supports in place to help him along. When he was 5 there was no having a conversation with him. His speech was odd and he could not maintain the topic. That has all changed. He still wants to talk about his special interests constantly like volcanoes, the loch ness monster, fast cars, sasquatch, etc. But so long as I dont engage him when he does that and remind him that other people dont always want to talk about those things he stops. It has taken him years to get to that point but he is at it

now. Just yesterday we were driving in the car and he has a habit of pointing out every car he thinks is even remotely cool which is almost all.. It can be rather annoying.... Anyways, he started on about a car he liked and then stopped himself and said" No I dont need to keep talking about that." So he is starting to self maintain and recognise when he is talking about something too much. But dont get me wrong he is still a chatty kathy...LOL..... The younger years are difficult. They were especially difficult for Warren and I. His communication skills were so impaired so he would have violent outbursts. Thank God those days are long gone. With plenty of structure, rules, discipline, the proper supports and lots of love he has come farther than I ever expected him to. I have to admit I felt things were very grim when he was little. But now he is this bright kid who is just a little eccentric, who talks a little too much about his pet interests. His grades are great. That makes me

very happy...... I also have him on cod liver oil which I give alot of credit to his progress. Since starting it we have seen tremendous improvement with his moods and his schoolwork. I MEAN TREMENDOUS...... There is hope........ And I see that now... when he was first diagnosed I had little to none...... I felt completely helpless and hopeless... Thos are all normal feelings which I believe every parent of a special needs child goes through. Its kind of like grieving. If I could go back in time and show myself how far my son has come I dont think I would have ever felt that hopeless.. But Obviously I cant..... I dont think I could appreciate his progress like I do if I had never felt that way. Well, I am sorry for blabbing... I think I have had too much coffee.... I am here if you need to rant and rave!!!

Thanks for your time,Kim__________________________________________________

Welcome!

You can introduce yourself :) How about thinking

about losing 10 pounds at a time? What kind of

plan are you using? The big 3 things to work on

are getting your water in, working out and food

plan. It's hard to hit all 3 at once - maybe baby

steps. I only manage 11 minutes on the bike at

the moment but working my way up :) Do you have

access to a pool - that's a great way to workout

and it's not as harsh on your body. PBS has a sit

and be fit show - you do it all from a chair.

Work what you can.

Welcome, Jenn. The first thing you do is keep a food and exercise journal

for a while to see exactly what you're eating, how much you're actually

moving, and where you can make changes.

If you want, you can pick a formal food plan, like Weight Watchers,

Nutrisystem, or plain old calorie counting, or just decide to make small but

healthy changes, like eating the same foods but not going back for seconds,

adding more fruit and veggies to what you already eat, switch from white

flour products to whole wheat, white rice to brown, drinking more water and

less soda - all those little things add up to big changes.

Move a little more. The old dieter's tricks of taking the staris instead of

the elevator, parking further away from where you're going, turn the stereo

on and dance around every day. Find an activity you love doing, and do it a

bit more. If you like to walk, start out slow, like walk 5 minutes away from

home, turn around, and walk 5 minutes back. Prefer indoor exercise? There

are many knee and back friendly videos out there. A lot of large women like

Sansone, Bliss, and even some of videos and

make modifications to prevent injury. You can even find things like chair

exericses that put no stress at all on those sore spots. Easiest of all are

the non-impact exercises, like tai chi, yoga modified for larger people and

those with back problems, and many toning/weight training exercises from

books and videos.

I have tried to loose

> weight in th e past but I always got stuck at twenty pounds.

I once plateaued at 45 pounds, stayed there for a few months, then made the

mistake of cutting my calories down way too low (under 800) so I eventually

started to gain at that low level because my body went into starvation mode.

When a plateau hits, you have to have faith and stick it out. You might want

to increase your exercise a bit (I couldn't at the time because of a neck

and foot injury) but even without changing a thing you*will* start to lose

again. I recently read that plateaus usually occur about every 6 weeks and

are nature's way of letting your body get used to the changes occuring, to

just have patience (Something I usually don't have and I wind up shooting

myself in the foot).

> myself motivated.

The way this list has been lately, if this doesn't get you started nothing

will! LOL

Look over the Files and Links pages for inspiration, grab yourself a

notebook to use as a journal ( dress it up with stickers and motivational

sayings in the margins), and keep coming back and checking in with the

group.

Hi...

I could have wrote that. I'm the same way. I have lost and found 20 lbs over and over and over. I think that is what worries me the most. I've lost 5 and I worry that when I get to 20, I'll give up. But we just have to keep trying as this time it's different and we'll go past that 20 lb mark and keep going!

I had knee surgery many years ago and that knee has never been as good as my other one. The weight is taking a toll on it. I'm just tired of feeling big... not being able to do so many things that I'd like to.

Hello!

I am new, too! I just wanted to welcome you! I homeschool my son so

there is never a problem...I can not imagine how hard it must be for

you. My son has had this for about three and a half years now. We

believe that is what he has. Have you tried the predisone with

your daughter? It truly stops my sons symptoms very quickly. I

understand how frustrated you feel. I think a lot of the parents (if

not most) have felt the very same way at some time or another. Well,

whatever your daughter has, I know that it is hard to endure a chronic

illness. I pray that she will find relief.
