Guest guest
You've got to be careful with Rice. It usually forms a clog especially right after the HM. Soups worked well for me post op. Rice is still a problem 11months post op. I think pasta or mashed potatoes works better as long as you eat slowly. The air feeling or trapped air feeling seems to be a normal thing according to many on this forum per my last post to ask others about this. From: math229 <math229@...> Subject: Laparoscopic Heller Myotomy post op 18days achalasia Date: Tuesday, November 15, 2011, 9:20 AM  Hello, Like most of you I had trouble eating and drinking for more moths than I care to remember. So on the 28th of October I had the pleasure to undergo the Laparoscopic Heller Myotomy and I spent only one evening in post-op. Then yesterday I had my first followup with my doctor at Fletcher in Burlington VT. I voiced one concern that the last couple days after eating my small portioned meals I felt blotted and expelled allot of gas. Was told this is normal? After leaving the hospital we (my son and I) stopped for some dinner I ate half a salmon fillet and some rice then it started, the urge to vomit. I vomited like 6 more time on our 3 hour ride home. No food just clear liquid type stuff. And this increased the chest pain and fears. today I will be talking to the Doc again and we shall see. It could be worse
Guest guest
I had Myotomy in 2009 and still can't eat rice, always gets stuck and end up spitting out! I avoid it completely! Sad, because I love rice. I would agree, try mashed potato's or pasta, and eat very slow! , California

I like sea food. I also have a strong stomach. Salmon is hit or miss for me though. Sometimes it is great. Other times I struggle to eat it. On occasion salmon will give me the urge to vomit. It usually happens soon after I start eating it and I don't think it has ever lead to me actually vomiting. I don't know why that is but I do have something that I wonder about, sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP). STPP is put on a lot of sea food, even salmon. It acts as a preservative and also helps keep water in the flesh and make it look lighter. You can tell on scallops because they will look bleach compared to untreated ones. People will think the treated sea food looks fresher than the untreated food even though the treated food may be older and even past the sell by date. Because it keeps more water in the flesh it also makes it look like you are getting more and at equal price/pound stores can charge more. One reason that sea food can be hit or miss for taste is the STPP. STPP has an alkaline chemical taste, think baking powder or baking soda. Treated food can have an off alkaline taste. Some people are more sensitive to alkaline tastes. Many people don't find the taste a problem. STPP is on the US government's list of generally recognized as safe list and most people are not going to have an issue with it. It is however a bit of a skin and mucus membrane irritant. It has been reported that it can even cause vomiting and esophageal burning with stronger doses (MSDS). Again, most people are not going to have a problem but we are not most people. I have said before that we need to watch things that can irritate the esophagus. I would include STPP in that group. Our esophagi can be already irritated and inflamed for a number of reasons. If there already is a sensitive area in the esophagus and some STPP salmon ends up just sitting against it, perhaps that could cause an urge to vomit. I am not saying that is what happened to you, but who knows. notan
Guest guest
Good to know about not eating rice. > > From: math229 <math229@...> > Subject: Laparoscopic Heller Myotomy post op 18days > achalasia > Date: Tuesday, November 15, 2011, 9:20 AM > > > > > > > > > Â > > > > > > > > > > Hello, Like most of you I had trouble eating and drinking for more moths than I care to remember. Guest guest
had my myot. in sept. i have had a few bouts with feeling real over stuffed and actually seeing my upper tummy all pooched out. if i eat soup doesnt happen. i never have had gas in my life . I AM NOT KIDDING! and now i get gas. i am just appalled! (not kidding here either) so it is a whole new world after my MYOT. and i bet everyone has some things to add to this., i think it is because i HAD A. for a long time and did not know i had it. and i thought i was " normal " when really my eating habits and the barfing, and my upper tummy pains, and my spasms, which i thought were reflux (were actually spasms i thought i was having heart attacks, had them for like 15 years that i can remember) i have to eat very slowly and i realize that generally i am over eating. i have decided to begin measuring what i eat. Guest guest
Its Funny what we are able to except as normal or at-least for us. Not being able to enjoy some thing is expected but having trouble with everything is what we wait for before doing anything about it i would say is true for most. So here I am same world different choices. Having the surgery set me back in a couple of ways but I do feel it will unlock new choices (food)without all the drama. Its nice to know others are listening.
Guest guest
Yes Kim, the same goes for me too! I have to eat small portions and NOT over eat or I will get sick. It's okay cause I enjoy just being able to swallow again, but bummer that I cannot eat anything anytime.  Julee From: Kim <kimellenbailey@...> " achalasia " <achalasia > Sent: Wednesday, November 16, 2011 12:58 PM Subject: Re: Laparoscopic Heller Myotomy post op 18days  had my myot. in sept. i have had a few bouts with feeling real over stuffed and actually seeing my upper tummy all pooched out. if i eat soup doesnt happen. i never have had gas in my life .
