Often it just means you have to have medications and follow-ups. One thing that may be a factor in why your surgeon would hold off is that any treatment that reduces pressure at the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) has some risk of causing increased acid reflux. Stomach acid exposure can be a cause of Barrett's. Achalasia may also cause Barrett's from trapped food rotting in the esophagus. That may be a wash but then he may also be interested in getting the esophagus as healthy possible first and making sure there isn't some cancer issue/risk near the LES before doing surgery there.
