I diagnosed with Achalasia in September and going for the surgery on this

Friday. As it is common with Achalasia, I had my share of numerous wake ups in

the middle of the night with choking and food regurgitation, vomiting, spasms.

Lost about 15 pounds in a year. Haven't eat a piece of bread for almost 4-5

months, mainly surviving on rice with veg gravy (whatever little quantity I can

eat before food starts coming back up my throat), oatmeal cereal, liquids) etc.

I am really sick of " living " like this and looking forward for my surgery even

though it is right before Christmas. The good thing is that my surgery will be

done by none other than Dr Finley in Vancouver. I had read many good

reviews about him, met him personally last month and found him very nice and

caring.

I am on liquid diet starting today and clear liquids from tomorrow. I will let

you know how the surgery goes next week assuming I will be physically able to do

so.

Thanks Mike.

My new problem seems to be that somehow I have started feeling sick and have a

fever of 37.3 deg C (i.e. 99.1 deg F). I don't want to miss my appointment, not

sure how soon when I will get it again :-(

I will contact Dr. Finley's office tomorrow.

Welcome ,

Wishing you all the best, and a speedy recovery from your surgery.  The worst

part is the clear liquid diet before and after surgery, trust me I know...it

feels like heaven the first time you get to actually eat some " soft foods " .

I would not worry that it's the holidays, just know that it is worth it to be

able to swallow food again and get better.  I don't think anyone truely

understands this but us!!!

keep us posted!!!!

Welcome to this sorry club, Not!

You are just a wee bit ahead of me -- my surgery's next Tuesday. And, heh,

you'll do fine: YOU can still eat rice! (and most of us, even post op still have

problems with that. . . . ) ~~ which goes to prove that even though we all have

the same condition, we remain very individual.

I was in ER the last of September, with malnutrition, dehydration, and very

messed up electrolytes. Had a small (15mm) dilation during the endoscopy, which

has helped a *little bit* and have been on mostly a puree diet since. The

crock pot/blender combo is truly blessed. Have even figured out out to do

blenderized salads that taste wonderful!

That said, yesterday into today has been outright awful! Waked all night to

spit up yesterday's noon chicken noodle soup -- but still consider myself on the

lucky side: the spitting wakes me, and I don't aspirate. One takes one's

blessings where one finds 'em!

Hope the fever gets resolved and doesn't delay the procedure! Make SURE your

surgeon *understands* how much trubble you are in right now. I think most of

them (medical peeps) really are unable to imagine what actual starvation feels

or looks like.

You'll be in my prayers, and light is being sent your general direction!

Hi Maureen, Kim, in Oregon, and in the Wilds of West

Virginia:

Thanks A LOT for your best wishes and encouraging words!!! They mean a lot to me

especially when I can feel that you can feel my pain and understand what I am

going through.

I am feeling much better now (other than liquid diet crap I am on, agree with

you in Oregon), no fever since last midnight. So I hope to stay the same

and remain fit to go under the knife tomorrow.

Hi in the Wilds of West Virginia, I am so sorry to hear about your

situation. Please stay upbeat, help is on the way (it is few more days before

your surgery) and you will be in all of our prayers too!

Marry Christmas, Happy holidays and Happy new year to everyone!!!

So surgery is finally OVER!!!

Surgery took place yesterday morning. I gained consciousness after about 3 hrs

since the start of surgery (not sure how long the actual surgery took place).

Not feeling any pain which was unbearable.

Got some fever again yesterday evening, so I was given Tylenols, otherwise

feeling fine. Had few walks, food with liquid diet yesterday evening and morning

today and then lunch with mushy food. Got the excellent feeling that food (and

pills) are going down w/o any problem.

Released from hospital today and back with family just by the time of Christmas

:-).

I really admire Dr Finley, his professionalism & carefulness, and will recommend

him anytime for these kind of treatments.

My sincere thanks to all of you for your best wishes and for keeping me in your

prayers. I can't describe in words how valuables they are for me.

Hi " in the Wilds of West Virginia " : Please stay upbeat!!!. Best of luck

with you upcoming surgery.

You will be in my prayers.

Ah, Not! So glad it went well for you. Yours coming just now and turning

out so easy is being a BIG HELP! I certainly *know* with no doubt at all that

this is vital and needed. That continuing to play around with alternative meds

(though Lord knows they all work *somewhat*)is not really a sane plan of action.

But I also know, that even in combo, they DO NOT change the underlying disease,

which IS progressive (if uneven in its progression).

You know, there *may* be a cure in the future, but I sure don't see anyone

working on one. And as a proud owner of an Orphan Disease, I'm sure not

expecting one in my lifetime.

Continue light and love your general direction!

Got a very bad heartburn on the early morning ... kept me awake for 2-3 hours

with nausea. Before my surgery, whenever I used to have acid reflux I used to

eat an apple and heartburn goes away instantly. But this time I can't eat apple

since I am on the mushy diet :-(

Is acid reflux common after HM surgery?

I am given anti-acid pills. Each pill is supposed to last for 24 hrs, my

previous dose from yesterday was supposed to be effective till 8:00 AM today but

I got the acid reflux around 5:00 AM.

I hope it is temporary and the stomach-wrap should take care of it in the long

term.

Other than acid reflux, rest is all fine.
