Some surgeons believe in making them more narrow that others do. I don't know how narrow your's is suppose to be but 5mm sounds narrow but workable. You wouldn't want to try swallowing an egg in the shell though. If 5mm works, then fine, but they need to find what doesn't work. notan
Guest guest
I suffered for 5 years with extreme symptoms. I had dilations which did not work, had botox which worked for a short time. I was only 54 at the time. When I had my barrium swallows, it was NORMAL every time. Yet my food normally would not go down, it would churn and I would spit nasty thick phlegm, it was awful! Also painful esophageal spasms. FINALLY I was sent for manometry which showed I wasn't crazy, that something was terribly wrong...achalasia! I then had a heller myotomy with partial fundoplication with great success!!! I would not give any weight to the barrium swallow...it is hit or miss, very unreliable in my case! Hope this helps and good luck~

Guest guest
, so glad you had a great outcome. May I ask - did the Heller have any effect on your spasms? Have they gotten better or worse? I'm planning on the surgery next year, but very concerned that the spasms will get worse as I've heard this can happen. Thanks, Kim
