Guest guest
Went to Emory today for a 1 year follow up barium swallow. They did a timed barium swallow at my request. They had to look up the protocol on google in order to know how to do it. Ugh. Anyway, it looks as if the barium is passing through. At the end of 5 minutes though, there was still some left in the sigmoid loop because that part of my esophagus is actually lower than the esophoagastric junction and is working against gravity to get into my stomach. So I need to be very aware of this and drink more water at bedtime to make sure everything is flushed down. The radiologist said my E didn't look terribly large (although he did not measure it at that point in time). I wonder if it shrunk any? To me, it looked exactly the same as it did 1 day post op. I guess thats a good thing. he also said there was no signs of esophagitis or erosion of the lining. I think you can tell from a barium if there is. i get my endoscopy in January and records will be sent to Dr. L as soon as possible. I really hope he doesn't suggest an 'ectomy any time soon. Keep me in your thoughts. Thanks for all the support over the years! Cara

Guest guest
Hi Cara, I notice you went to Emory?  I'm in the Atlanta area - was referred to Dan at Emory. Told he is one of the top HM surgeons. Can you share who you're seeing / what your experience is?  Thanks, Kim ________________________________ From: spotoca <cspoto@...> achalasia Sent: Wednesday, November 9, 2011 1:01 PM Subject: 1 year post op barium swallow  Went to Emory today for a 1 year follow up barium swallow. Guest guest
Kim, I live in Brookhaven and will be moving to s Creek in December. Are you close? As for my story, you can find it in the history by searching on my name. However, I will give you the short version here: Starting having symptoms at age 17 ignored the symptoms until I could not swallow water - took 4 years to get to that point Diagnosed in 1996 at age 21 with Achalasia (diagnosed 1st time!) Received balloon dilatation symptom free for 2 years once symptoms came back, I dealt with chugging water to push food down this lasted for 12 years Had twin boys and finally decided to get another barium swallow June 2010 barium showed end stage achalasia with esophagus grossly dialated to 10.5cm wide and a sigmoid 90 degree turn at the bottom Traveled to see Dr. Rice at the Cleveland Clinic and got more testing He recommended a myotomy I wound up going to Dr. Luketich at UPMC to have a myotomy on 10/13/10 Its been one year and I am doing well. I see Dr. Christie GI at Emory - she knows Dr. Christie ordered my follow up tests which will be sent to Dr. L once they are final. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me anytime!
