Hello .  I am sorry that you are still having a lot of issues.  This

disease is not a fun one and I have found that it is hit or miss when it comes

to beuing able to eat different foods from person to person.  I have to stay wa

from bell peppers mainly the green ones.  I now have some porblems with dairy

products also.  I however have had several surgeries with my last one being an

esophajectomy.  I have also found that I do a lot beeter if I have my last meal

several hours before I go to bed.  I have found myself eating bigger meals

earlier in the day and the having a very light meal toward the end of the day.

If you have any other questions please feel free to ask.  Welcome to the

family.

Subject: Introduction - Hi I'm

Hi

I'd like to introduce myself to the group. My name is . I had a Heller

Myotomy after a frustrating search for the correct diagnosis about three years

ago. This was done by Dr. Salky in Manhattan. I'm currently being seen by Dr.

Litwin in Worcester MA.

I have continued problems swallowing and horrible night reflux that rears itself

on a occassional basis lasting around four or five days. I'm on one of those

cycles now :(

The question I'd like to ask is what foods do you avoid to mitigate those

problems? I have identified Chocolate, Onions, Garlic, and soda as contributors

to these problems as well as tomato sauce (unless I use Marzano's which are less

acidic). What else should I try to avoid?

I also know about coffee but I dilute mine and it seems ok if I use Green Mt.

Dark Roast diluted.

Thank you everyone. I have been reading this forum for about a year and thought

I'd finally say hello.

Hi ,

I have the exact same triggers that you do (also, any carbonated beverage). Are

you sleeping on a wedge pillow? I had HM a year ago and thought I didn't need it

anymore, but when I removed it from my bed I had a bad couple of weeks.

Hi ,

Welcome to the group and your identifying yourself as part of it. I am trying

very hard to get a sense of what you are saying, and I keep coming up with the

thought that your present problem might be due to something other than what you

are selecting to eat and drink. As you know, we all have our own set of

" triggers " which might make getting the correct answer to your question from our

group a bit difficult.  I, for one, live on carbonated beverages and have no

trouble with chocolate, in spite of my being " end-stage " nearly 20 years ago

before having the Heller myotomy, and being told by some of the best surgeons 5

years ago that I must have an esophagectomy.

While suggestions from other group members are fine, chances are it may have no

application to you. Sometimes you need " trial and error " and keep a " food diary "

as to what you have eaten and the time of day, and what kind of positive or

negative reaction you had to it, and what level of stress you were experiencing

that day. A pattern might be ascertained.

However, if you haven't done so already, I would strongly suggest you have an

endoscopy and a barium swallow just to see what is going on inside. Certainly

there should be some kind of physical manifestation in your esophagus for all

the trouble you are presently having.

Our " stories " don't end after having a Heller Myotomy. It only begins a new

chapter.

In this support group we like to be clear about whether we are

discussing reflux from the stomach, or regurgitation/reflux from the

esophagus. The food you listed are classic for causing acid reflux from

the stomach and that can be a problem after treatment, such as a

myotomy. Other types of food classic for that are greasy food and spicy

food. But the list varies from one person to another. If the reflux is

from the stomach you may want to try a PPI if you are not already on

one. They don't just reduce acid. Because more acid can increase reflux

they can also reduce reflux. As you noticed with the tomato sauce, acid

can be a factor. You can get omeprazole (Prilosec) 20mg without an Rx to

try. With an Rx one would typically take 40mg or more. If it helps be

sure to tell your doctor because he needs to know if you are on it

long-term. But as a test it is something you can try.

The reflux may not be from the stomach though. It may be food that is

not making it into the stomach. In that case food that has a hard time

getting through the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) would most likely

be on the list. This could include meats, fresh fruit and vegetables,

some breads. Again this list too varies from one person to another. Food

on the acid reflux list sometimes actually helps get food through the

LES because they may cause the LES to relax a little. Which is what also

lets food reflux from the stomach. Greasy food can also slip through

easier. Results here are also not consistent from one person to the next.

I'm sorry that you feel that my suggestions are probably useless. That isn't

very neighborly...
