i wanted to know something. i had a heller in sept. all is good. food goes down

with no prob except bread not too good. have gained 15 pounds. but what i wanted

to know is this... have many of yall have recurrance of swallowing problems

after a heller? and if so how long did it last? and if it doesnt then what would

be next? and is there anything i should know to do maybe to make this last? what

information can you pass on to me? last night i had eaten potato soup for supper

and much later i could still feel that lump in my E. but i can hardly throw up

now. i have a few times but i used to be able to stick out my tongue and barf.

now i cant do it as well even if i feel something in there. i have not had any

reflux at all.but i am going to say this may be totally unrelated as i have had

problems with my neck. My right arm goes to sleep and hurts a lot and my husband

says it is a nerve. i wonder if it could be related.

Hi Kim,  I have had achalasia for a very long time and only had surgery last

year.  I think we are all different in many ways.  This surgery should last,

but as I read these boards that is not always the case so we just don't know.

Many people have had good success and were able to have the best surgeons which

could help the outcome.  I can only speak for myself, I try to eat smaller

portions per meal, chew well and not overdo putting to much into my E at a

single meal.  My ability to swallow from the Heller is pretty darn good these

days, but I still eat smaller amounts.....the only things that I have to be

extra careful with are sticky rice, thick breads (which I avoid) and

meat....must chew it well.

Use common sense, remember that the surgery only helps the food to go down

better with gravity assisting and the LES is open now instead of shut.  Oh and

yes it is really hard to barf....I can't anymore for some reason.  So if

anything gets alittle stuck, it is a problem.  I also have neck issues from

degeneration, don't know if it is related as I didn't have those issues 23 years

ago when it all started???

My husband had a Heller in Nov 2008. About 3-4 times since, for about a month,

he will throw up everything he eats. He's going through it right now, he just

this weekend ate some solid food after eating broth for 3 weeks. He definitely

has NO problem throwing up.

BUT -- he hasn't been to a dr in 3 years either. I would advise (listen to me, I

don't even have achalasia & I'm dispensing advice!) that you stay on top of

things, & go for your follow ups, & be sure to call when you think something

isn't right. I wish my husband would. Good luck :)

My surgeon said he doesn't want me to vomit...ever! He said it could undo

stitches or put stress on the fundoplication! If I feel nauseous I should see

my doctor and get an anti-sickness injection!

Actually all three are for preventing reflux and vomiting is a type of

reflux (backward movement). The partial fundoplications are done in

cases where a full fundoplication may be too restrictive, such as

achalasia. Being that they all hinder reflux to some degree they will

all hinder vomiting to some degree. Many may not notice the difference.

Even with a partial some people will have trouble vomiting even though

others do not. We are all different. We don't all have the same pressure

at the LES or fail to relax equally. Also, I doubt a person can vomit

through a strong esophageal spasm, too much pressure needed.

is on disability/SSI. She has a g/j tube and a tracheotomy as well

though, and I assume they played a part in her getting disability. Not sure

when they take them out if she will continue to get it or not.

Subject: question

Hi all,

It's been a while since I've posted. I was just wondering if anyone has been

placed on disability or social security after being diagnosed with A. I had

a HM in Jan. and I'm already having trouble eating/drinking again. My case

was the worst my doctor had seen and my esophagus was completely closed at

the time my HM was performed.I am just wondering if it's re-closing.I also

have been having extremely bad spasms and nothing seems to help. Hope to

hear from you guys soon..
