MAOIs & food restrictions

If anyone is considering, or is on MAOI's I have a great

list of the tyramine content in foods that a very progressive

psychiatrist gave me.

His theory was " why suffer with global food restrictions, instead

know the tyramine content, if any, and know that you can eat

almost all foods that have tyramines, just in very small quantities

that will not add up to a hypertensive attack "

That way your not quitting certain foods and creating a craving!

Which then leads to disappointment and dissatisfaction with the

MAOI protocol.

The chart shows the mg. content of tyramines in foods.

MAOI's inhibit the amines that break down tryramines,

so one has to remove, or cut down, tyramines in their diet,

so the body can digest the small amount that it is exposed to.

Once you understand the mechanism of an MAO Inhibitor it takes

the mystery out of the medication. MAOI have been around for a

long time and are very effective. Because of the food restrictions,

and the prevailing attitude of many psychiatrist not to educate their patients

correctly on MAOI's, the reputation of this class of psychotropics has

been incorrectly labeled. Also, these meds. are cheap, or rather

inexpensive!!!

If you go to a pharmacy and ask for a food restriction list they give you

a global restriction list that is so intimidating no one in their right mind

would go on the MAOI. That is what I told my psychiatrist. He agreed

and said that is why he first educated all his prospective MAOI patients

to a comprehensive understanding of this class of psychotropics, once they

understood completely, then he would write the prescription. Because of

his willingness to educate and take the necessary time he has had great

results with very few problems!

If anyone is interested I can try to scan it in and post it?
