Hi everybody, another question for everyone. Has anyone been tested (stool,

saliva, urine, hair analysis) by the Great Smokies Lab in North Carolina or

had total biological analysis of any of the above anywhere for diagnosis?

The reason I am asking is that they have just opened up a center here in

Jerusalem connected with that lab, representatives of it, and they suggest

testing for CFS like symptoms. Lots of us here in Israel were thinking of

it, I was trying to find out if anyone has experience with them or with such

tests and if they are worth anything. The prices here are exorbitant, tests

cost between 90 to 900(!) dollars including overnight shipping overseas in

order to text in the USA. In any event, I would be grateful for any info. or

personal experiences from anyone.

Thanks

Judy B.

Judy,

The short answer is yes, they do have tests that can be useful. The

question is do they have people in Israel who know what to do with

the information furnished by the tests? One person on this board (I

think) got good results from an amino acid screening test. That one

is pretty simple, find out what you are deficient in, then take

supplements.

If you have GI problems, they pioneered the Complete Digestive Stool

Analysis, which give a lot of detail about what in your digestive

system is working and what isn't. This is a case where you need some

local expertise to tell you what to do.

They also have a number of other tests which may be helpful, the big

exception being their parasite lab. They made their name as a

specialty parisitic test lab, but the original owners sold out to new

people and the parisitology dept. is no longer that good.

If it was me, I'd find out what doctors, nutritionists or whoever

they are working with and interview them closely. If I found

somebody who sounds like they know what they are talking about, it

might be worth investing the money.

Hi,

This lab found my intestinal parasitical infection when Mayo wrote me off as

crazy! I was wasting by time alert doc sent specimins to this lab.

Fortunately insurance covered at that time - with all the cutbacks now, I

don't know. Since lab in in Israel will your insurance cover this? Have

net friend in Israel who lived here in US for a while and couldn't wait to

get home to decent health insurance!

take care,

Christie

thanks christie,

I dont think my Israeli insurance will cover the tests and I will have to

pay privately. Glad to hear the lab is legit. and I will turn to them for

the tests. Let's hope for the best. After they discovered the parasites, how

did they treat you? Did it help your recovery? How do you stand now with

CFS?

Take care

thanks luke and especially about the parasites which is the one things which

I think will be important. They dont have the blood tests here yet and will

only start doing them in a month or so, as for the amino acid tests. All the

rests are sent to the USA by overnight plane/mail. Thanks,

Judy

Hi,

Although I had had other strange things happen to me as retinal infarct,

elevated ANA and EB titers, I felt fine until this infection, which I got

through infected scope in hospital proceedure. It took 7 monthes for doctor

to believe me and the flagyl and keftabs did work. However, within few

monthes I started to ache in morning, then needed more sleep and one day I

crashed - just could not stay awake! And although I did as much as I knew

to stay healthy, I haven't and I think this infection was the downfall point

that pushed me into chronic illness. I have been dxed with lupus, lyme

disease, and have involvement of major organs. Lastest in suspected

mitochrondrical disorder. So I would have to say I have CFS PLUS!, and

wish there were more answers than questions. And answers are necessary as so

many are ill and don't really know why. I am waiting to be scheduled for a

muscle biospy which may provide answers I hope!

Is CFIDS a dx used in Israel? If so, are there doctors who treat these

unusual conditions?

Take care,

Christie

I have used them a number of time with two different physicians and have always

been pleased. My understanding is that they are one of the best functional labs

out there.

thanks Phil, I intend to use their metabolic tests and possibly one or two

others. Hope that my doctors will know what to do with the results!
