Buy a good blood pressure cuff, Walgreens has one with a digital

readout, that you can take your own readings on.  Keep a record every

day-measure it in the same possition and at the same time every day.

I take mine in bed first thing when I wake.  Over a couple of weeks

this will give you a base line of what your normal readings are.

With the meds you are taking you should see normal BP of 130-140/80-

90.  If you continue to have a high readings your dr will put you on

an aldosterone blocker.  If you have Primary Aldostronism, a blocker

like inspra or spiro will show in about 2 weeks bringing your

pressure down to normal.

You can plot your readings on graf paper, a bar on the systolic

and a bar on the dystolic, and a line between the two.  With time you

will begin to see a trend that indicates what meds are doing what.

The chart will show your doctor a much more accurate picture of your

condition, without stress or white coat syndrome.

Stopping meds to see the effect is not all that great, but

sometimes the only way to find out what works for you and what

doesn't.  But if you are going to turn yourself into a lab rat, you

should take good data and keep an accurate record to show yourself

and your doctor.  Wayne

Welcome back.

Please read Pam's story on CHF and PA.

A Dr who gives you a bp that ends in a 5 neeeds to be retrained unless it was an avearge or done with a machine and I never trust machine BPs to make imporant life and death decisions.

Keep up the good work and we will help you train this new Dr.

Hello Everyone,

Well as you can see I have rejoined the group and I think it was

predicted that I would. When I decided to leave the group I was

feeling very frustrated and probably acted in haste. Here I was

taking BP medication for over 20 yrs and then this PA is going to

tell me that I don't have a cardiac problem much less a BP problem.

On one hand I was very happy because I do not want any cardiac

problems but on the other hand I was kind of frustrated that this guy

who only saw me a handful of times could make such a determination

about my BP. I did an experiment on my own however. It wasn't the

smartest thing I could have done but I did it and I'm here to tell

about it.

In order to prove this PA wrong I stopped taking my BP medications

from Thursday to Saturday and I had the nurse on my job take my BP at

various times throughout the day to see what it was. I don't know if

she took it right or not but each time she took it...it was high.

On Sunday I started taking the medications again though and today I

did go to a new Cardiologist who was shocked that this PA made the

statement about me not being at risk for a heart attack because I was

under 55. After listening to my family history and examining me he

decided that I need to repeat the Echocardiogram because of the

results from last year that said "Trace MR and Trace TR." He wants to

make sure that has not worsened.

He's also going to do a Nuclear Stress Test and also

an "aldosterone/renin" level in addition to quite a bit of other lab

work. When I mentioned the aldosterone/renin test to the other dr he

told me the Endocrinologist had to order them. This dr. said anyone

could order them.

My BP today in his office was 167/112. He took it 3 times and he also

took it in a few different positions. That number was the last number

he got. The highest he got was while I was standing up. Then it was

172/115.

Hopefully I will have some answers in a few weeks but his initial

diagnosis is: Uncontrolled HTN, Hypomagnesium, High Cholesterol, and

Stage A CHF. (whatever that is.) I know CHF is Congestive Heart

Failure but I have no idea what the Stage A means.

My present medications are now: Cozaar 100mg OD, Lasix 40mg OD,

Potassium 10meq OD, Lopressor 25mg BID, Slo-Mag 500mg TID, Lipitor

10mg HS, Protonix 40mg BID, ASA 81 mg OD.

Do not buy drug store brand BP cuffs--they stink!! They overstate

you diastolic by at least 10 points. Get a proven brand--Omron. It

is rated best by cardiologists and consumer reports.

Thanks,

Walgreen has one made by Omron, their digital model 80-6080W. It is

$60, and my chief of cardiology at Washington Hospital said it is a

little low (2-5 pts) on the high side, but more accurate than the

manual sphygos on the lower numbers. They actually use it to calibrate

their expensive stuff on the lower numbers. " On the 'normal' BP's we

trust it more than anything else, " he said.

The other models I do not know.

Well, if you dont have a trained human who can do it right.

Nothing yet beats that and it is especially true for the diastolic which the machines only calculate they do not measure it.

Greetings from the void,

I am just interested to ask if more medics might consider Iraq positions if the

rotations were equal time like 4/4 or 5/5...and is it the same company which

employs staff in both Kuwait and Iraq?

Cheers now.

Hi ,

Nice to hear from you again. I was out of town for a long weekend and could not

reply to your nice letter earlier.

I am well. Stuck at home though. Baku course was very nice and I was delighted

with " Prant " 's services. Thanks.

I am interested in Middle East jobs. So if you go there don't leave me behind.

My best regards to all Ramex crew. I have only good memories.

Take care and keep smiling. You do it well.

Yours,

Hi and welcome back from lurkdom. Congrats on the longevity of your marriage and becoming a new gramma ;-)

I have done just about every diet out there, from acupuncture to WW, and had some very good success with a few of them for a while. The best run I had was when I followed the rice diet and lost 160 lbs in 9 months. I was able to keep it off for about two years. I can remember when my maintence spirit broke. I can still to this day picture it in my mind. Long story short it had to do with my sons and emotional problems.

I think we all have tried a million diets over the years yo-yo'ing up and down... wow, that's a lot of weight you lost though... you'll get it back off again, I am sure.....

I am trying something new this time, doing the rice diet again, but a little different. The first phase of the rice diet only gives you about 700 - 900 calories a day for at least two weeks. I know this is very wrong, so I am adding protein and more veggies as well as some dairy.

WOW, that's lo cal! Glad to hear you are adding to it, especially if you exercise, your body will need the fuel. I don't know much about the rice diet, never heard about it, even though Sue and the others have talked about it from time to time.

I am drinking more water than I ever thought someone could swallow.

Uggggh..... I consider it a good day when I *gag down* my 8 glasses LOL.... I could probably stand to increase to 10-12 and may start trying to increase.... but uggggh LOL...

I am also going to Positive Changes, a hypnosis process that I think is really great. I attend weekly sessions and rotates on a schedule, first week is 40 minutes of hypnosis, second week is a coaching session, where we discuss the past week, nutrition, exercise and anything else that might be either bothering me, or questions that I need to have answered. The third week is something different I haven't done it yet, so I am not sure exactly what to expect. Once I know I will let you all know.

I think you mentioned something about this before, or it could have been another member. I have never tried hypnosis for weight loss (eh, or anything else for that matter).... there's a Positive Changes place about 2-3 blocks from my house, I outta look them up and see what it costs/etc...

They record each session and you take it home along with the cd player and earphones that they give you. They encourage you to listen to the session at least once a day. I come home after work, go upstairs and put on my earphones and listen to the session. I really have to tell you, I find my resolve very strong to stay on track with my eating. I am not hungry and I am not right now scrounging around looking for something to graze on.

Yay, that's fantastic.

On May 21 I weighted 279.5, yesterday when I weighted my self I was done 269.5, 10 pounds lost in the two week period, plus I have my period right now so I feel I did extremely well.

Great job! Keep up the good work!!

I don't have a weight goal in mind right now, last time I gave myself a goal and I didn't achieve it, I was far to hard on myself and relapsed, a trap I don't want to fall into again. I do know I want to be less than I am today by my 50th birthday which isn't until late December.

I am thinking mini-goals is the way to go. I have lost 25 lbs give or take in almost a year... I know where I'd like to end up, but that of course was what I weighed coming out of high school, before children, and may not be realistic or feasible again.... I'll know when I get there what my end weight will be.... wanted to be at "goal" by my 40th b-day next summer.... got a little over a year to get there, that could be another 25-75 lbs less :-D

......and vow to be more active from here on out.

Look forward to your postings... we do understand life happens, tho

My husband paid for it, for the year, 52 weeks of sessions, it was a little over $2,500! After considering lapband and all that other stuff I was considering, this seems a lot safer and I know I need to "re-wire" my brain on food, diet, exercise and this seems like the best option, I wasn't doing it on my own very well.

I am thinking mini-goals is the way to go.

I thought about a mini goal, and thinking my next goal will be under 250. If I am under 250 I can go sky diving again and that is yet another goal I want to reach.

Thanks for welcome out of lurkdom, I didn't join the group to lurk, but to participate, and again a goal I need to work on. Everyone always has something to share that others can learn from. I am always willing to learn!

Every day, in every way I get better and better.

I was devastated with whathe was going thru and it effected me the only way I could handle it, I ate.

I think *most* women are the same way: emotional eaters. We're happy, we eat. We're sad, we eat. We're anxious or something, we eat. Need to get out of that emotional tie to food, definately. I have been doing pretty well with it this past year, sure still have ups and downs... have looked at that "When food is food and love is love" stuff from that gal on Overeaters Anonymous type stuff....

I am using the Rice Diet now as my base and hope to incorporate it into my"redevelopment" of eating.

Glad you are finding something that works as a base, though.... I am interested in learning about the rice diet, just so I know what you all are talking about so am glad that Sue posted the links.

Wow, to look at the total, it seems a lot... trying to equate that down to weekly, etc in my head to justify the cost, but it isn't happening any time soon. I see ads from time to time also here local about a psychologist that does hypnotism and her "successes" with patients... she has DVDs and stuff you can buy to do at home. That might be more feasible. Keep letting us know how it goes!!

That sounds exciting (and scarey too).... don't know if that is for me, but I have enough on my "to do" lists for after losing pounds.
