Day 9 - not so good

ok...for 5 of the 9 days I have been able to eat mashed potatoes and even some

rice. I even tried some very soft cookies that seemed fine. But on day 8, at

lunch, I had what I call an episode which is where when I take a drink of water

to help with the food and it all comes back up and then I regurgitate what I

have eaten. It has now been 24 hours and I have been regurgitating (liquids is

all I have taken) since. I just tried some mashed potatoes, because I have had

success in the past because it is heavy food, and it seems to be working

although I do feel like something is sitting in my sternum, which is normal.

Is this normal after surgery? Should I call my doctor?

Hi Graham I was told after my surgery that for several months there is swelling

and the food sticking may be normal but should progressively get better. In my

case it was a whole lot better right from the start. I still have to be mindful

of what I eat and eat slow.....and always with lots of fluids. The pain in my

chest was all day before surgery. I took hours to eat, a bite at a time, my

meals just flowed into each other. By the time it was dinner time I would just

eat a very small portion at one sitting and then wait to see if it would decide

to stay down- or come up. It usually came back up.

After the surgery the constant chest pains were gone BUT I had a different

problem. Horrible spasms that were totally disabling. The only thing that

helped was a heated corn bag. Those lasted for about a month before they

started to slowly diminish in quantity and length. I am about 5 months post op

now & I do get daily spasms but they don't normally interfere with what I'm

doing and don't last long. I've recently had problems with food feeling stuck

again. I'm waiting to get in to see if it's les problem....maybe it's tightened

again? Or if it's spasm related?

Keep us up to date on what's going on.

Hi Graham-

It does seem odd to have foods that worked a few days ago, now not work. Perhaps

something got stuck and is now blocking the rest? I would probably call my dr if

it were me. It may be nothing, but good to check.

I had a couple short spells of regurgitation about a week and a half in if I ate

too soon after eating something heavy like scrambled eggs or fish. After a few

hours or by the next morning I would think gravity would have pulled everything

down. I would call your doctor if it's been a couple days. My doctor met with me

about 2 weeks after the procedure and I have a follow-up in 3 months. I'm taking

it slow with introducing new foods. In regard to meats, I'm only eating soft

fish a little at a time a couple times a week, but I did try a little poultry in

gravy (a couple small bites) and did fine. Oddly enough, I've nibbled on a

little bacon and have done fine. I'm totally staying a way from cripy breads,

fresh fruits and vegetables.

The other possibility is that it could be GERD and meds for that would help. I

was afraid I might end up with this as a result of the procedure, but so far

this week (4 weeks in) I've had no pain or significant regurgitation for over a

week, and no acid or coughing to speak of.

But everyone is different. I'm a bit disconcerted to see some people posting

about difficulties months later. I figured there could be problems years later

but months...
