Guest guest
I suffered with botox and was told by last upper gi doc that she couldn't give me anymore as well, that wes 3 years ago, and I have finally come to the conclusion that yes, I need a Heller. I too had a hard time finding a surgeon, and I have to find a new upper GI doc to find that surgeon, and I'm in McPherson Kansas! So, I'm going to Wichita, KS to have mine done and it's only about an hour from here, (50 miles), so, if a girl from McPherson can find one, I would think it would be even easier to find one in New York, but Good Luck is always needed. It was also nice to be able to talk to the surgeon and find out what exactly will be done, where they will go in, how he has done etc. Example, they usually do in around the belly button, but since I have major surgery there w/a huge scar, he will have to star higher, up around rib cage. So, these are good things to know before going under. So, good luck! I have had botox injections in my esophagus three times since then which were effective, but my doctor says he doesn't want to do too many and it's time for the myotomy surgery. I am in New York City. It seems so many in this group are located in the midwest and go to the Cleveland Clinic or Mayo. Do you know of any good surgeons in New York? Do you think it's necessary to travel so far for this surgery? And what's the recovery really like? How long are you typically recovering in the hospital and laid up at home? Many thanks for your help.
Guest guest
Please wait for some others to respond...they may know of some reputable ones. Its not can they do a myotomy its how many have they done that is key. You really need to do your homework and not rush into it. I believe there is a list...look in the archives on this group. Hold on...I am sure you will get the responses you needMaureen Young From: ktross21 <ktrosset@...> Subject: SURGERY ADVICE NEEDED achalasia Date: Wednesday, August 24, 2011, 3:26 PM Â I was diagnosed about three years ago with achalasia. Guest guest
hello. I don't know about any surgeons in NY but i live in philadelphia pa and i had my surgery just this past friday. It was done by Dr. Dempsey at the University of Pennsylvania and he is great and has done over 200 of these surgeries. Also I heard about Dr. Luketich in Pittsburg. Im not sure how far these are for you though. The best thing to do is look for a surgeon who has done alot of these. Normally you stay overnight and for me the only pain I had was in my shoulder because of the anesthesia. Since it is now Wednesday i am now in a little pain. I had 5 tiny incisions which is the Dor Fundopication. It is still difficult to lift things which you are not to really lift anything heavy for 1 to 2 weeks. I hope this helps and good luck. katie in philly pa. On Wed Aug 24th, 2011 4:26 PM EDT ktross21 wrote: >I was diagnosed about three years ago with achalasia. Guest guest
I live in Mississippi...I flew up to Mayo Clinic in Minnesota...twice. Once for diagnosis and the second time for surgery. It was VERY important to me to be under the care of the best. The recovery wasn't bad. I was off work for 2.5 weeks after surgery, and I needed every bit of that...(I don't tolerate pain well and generally do NOT heal quickly either). I had to spend 2 nights in the hospital...the second night was only because I couldn't urinate without a catheter still (I've always had bladder issues!) > > I was diagnosed about three years ago with achalasia.
