ok heres what happened to me. I just went in for my HM this past friday and i

think the surgery was 3 to 4 hours. I stayed overnight and so saturday i was

able to drink water, apple juice and cranberry juice you know the normal

hospital stuff. I dont think i was allowed to drink the day that i had the

surgery. Saturday i also had water ice and jello and ice cream. Fortunately for

me I was not in pain after the surgery. I was prescribed liquid tylenol with

codeine which is tylenol 3 to take home. On monday i was able to eat soft foods

which is mainly like scrambled eggs, cream of wheat, mashed potatoes and stuff

like that. You want to make sure that you don't overeat because you will feel

sick after. I have to call the surgeon today and i hope he lets me eat some more

food. I hope this helps. in philly.

u eat - how soon afterwards? i know that it would surely be pureed stuff? then

how long to go to real food? and liquid goes down immediately? how long does the

surgery take? sorry but i like to know details. thanks kim bailey

Depends how they do the myotomy. I think if you have it done laparoscopicaly (5

holes and use one for the camera) then you will be in for a few days. Other

patients who have had the HM done this way will advise you on how long your stay

in hospital will be.

Barium studies are not accurate in predicting outcomes or effectiveness of

myotomy unless it is done in a timed manner, i.e, measure the column of barium

emptying - in seconds or mintues before and after surgery.

Oh gosh, I hope you get some answers soon!!  I'm having my hm tomorrow morning

in Wichita, Kansas w/Dr. on at Wesley Medical Center.  Have suffered for

6 years.  I'm hoping my expectations are not too high though.

Good Luck!  Jen

Carry on venting your feelings. You will feel better afterwards. Perhaps it

wasn & #39;t the wisest of things to drive so close to surgery. Can you get

someone to drive you home when you are discharged from hospital?

Well, thanks for the responses everyone. I haven & #39;t had a great time with

this HM. I stayed two nights in the Hospital for nausea and low bp. Started

driving home yesterday, and got about 2 hrs to west va when I started having

really bad heartburn. After drinking a bit of water, I threw up in the car.

White froth and a bit of orange jello came up - telling me it hadn & #39;t gone

down when I ate it 5 hrs earlier at the hospital. So we stay that nite in W Va

and then I woke up this morning with the most awful heartburn feeling. This time

I am prepared and drink Tylenol, take tums, gas-x, a tiny bit of apple juice,

prilosec, water, and finally my prescribed roxicet painkiller and it all comes

back up, regurgitated, with white froth. So none of that water or medicine went

down. So I sipped a little more roxicet and we drove back to UPMC in Pitt for a

reevaluation. I had a ct scan and am now waiting till tomorrow morning. I am not

allowed to take any more

liquids by mouth while they do testing. it seems like liquids are not going

into my stomach. I feel fine, no pain ironically - as long as I don & #39;t drink

anything. I think the LES is still closed from all the stress. I think the

heartburn yesterday was possibly caused by the orange jello, and then this

morning from not having any food or drink for over 15 hours. Hopefully

everything will work it & #39;s way out. Sorry to vent to my & quot;achalasia & quot;

fam. I hope everyone is safe in the storm. Take care,

ps sorry I can & #39;t delete the rest of the message

prefer to

still

& gt; & gt; have a successful surgery even if a little bit of barium is left after

more

& gt; & gt;

& gt; & gt; Hi all, writing this from the hospital bed, post HM about 12 hrs ago.

I

& gt; & gt; watched the barium swallow and was wondering. For most people, does

the

& gt; & gt; liquid just flow right down? Right after surgery? That is if you got

to see

& gt; & gt; yours as it was happening. Just wondering.
