Guest guest
Hi, I had my HM a couple of years back now and must admit I have vomited a couple of times so we can still do it but it is different but nothing to worry about. " Some who can will think everyone can and some who can not will think everyone can not. Also, it isn't just a thing of having had the surgery or not. Some people before the surgery also have trouble because they have higher LES pressure than some of the others, or high spasm pressures in the esophagus. If the stomach does not overcome these pressures it isn't going to happen. After surgery it depends on a number things, including, LES pressure and fundoplication type and tightness. The more restrictive the fundoplication the more the stomach has to overcome to vomit. We know our nerves for controlling the area where the esophagus and stomach meet don't respond correctly. They may not respond correctly to retching either. More so for some people than for others. I wonder what it is like for those with badly dilated or sigmoid esophagi to vomit. Before or after surgery. notan

Before or after surgery. "   There is probably going to be a different answer for each person who responds. As you know, after surgery I have a badly dilated and sigmoid esophagus. In my case, when my stomach experienced a " condition " that would normally result in my having to vomit, I would go thru all the sensations leading up to vomiting, then start " retching " away as if I was vomiting, and then feel much better right afterwards, as I " normally " would in my " pre-achalasia " days, the only difference being that nothing came up.  So, a " simulated " vomiting experience tended to have the same results as would a real vomiting experience. The " good " news was that I seemed to get all the benefits of a " productive " vomit without the " mess. "   Is this " TMI? "  > > ... but can we NOT throw up after a HM?? ... > To quote my earlier message, " some can, some can not. I picture some of these megaesophagi just filling up with and not conveying out the stomach contents. Then there are those with kinks and twists. Just seems like to much to hope for that they would actually work in this context. notan
Guest guest
What you are suggesting, Notan, is entirely within the realm of possibility. My esophagus, described by some as a " second stomach " is so huge that if I was going thru the motions of a vomiting " reflex " it could have sent particles up to the base of my esophagus. Without " reverse peristalsis " it could not travel any further. Since there is no sensation in the base of the esophagus (unless being stretched by too much food in there at one time, thereby feeling " pressure " ), I would remain unaware that anything did in fact come up to that point.  What you have said makes sense to me that if the stomach wants to expel " foreign " matter that it finds " annoying, " how else would I feel better immediately afterwards unless it really did push it up and out (or down and out the other way, though less likely).  In all other respects it felt like I was vomiting. It probably has now been over 10 years since it last happened.  > > > ... Guest guest
I am pretty much unable to throw up after HM (10 months ago). I took two of one of my daily prescription pills (seriously, it was an accident), and was totally unable to do anything about it. It was quite the ordeal. > >> > >> > > > >> > > ...
