Guest guest
My significant other, recently diagnosed with achalasia, has found a lot of benefit from Iberogast, a German herbal remedy for enhancing motility and other GI functions. It was suggested by our holistic MD, who says the European functional medicine docs are raving about it and can't understand why it isn't more widely used in the U.S. Has anyone else tried Iberogast? She asked me to recommend it here based on her experiences. She has also had good luck with sublingual nitroglycerine, prescribed by our primary care doc (a very good one who got her achalasia diagnosed right away). The nitro seems pretty effective, though certainly not foolproof, at preventing the " stuck food " ' problem during meals. It has even helped as a rescue several times after she had already gotten clogged up. On our doc's advice, she tries to use the nitro as infrequently as possible (going out to dinner, etc.) to reduce the chance of developing tolerance to it. So far so good. Our doc is hopeful she can avoid surgery with approaches like this, in addition to mind-body work to aid in relaxation and mobilizing her swallowing function. She will be trying medical hypnosis next. We will continue to report results, as this group has been extremely helpful to her.
