Guest guest
I just had my HM in late August. I had to see the surgeon about 2 weeks later. My next appointment is 3 months after that. I was kind of surprised there wasn't an in-between appointment: how would I know what I could eat. So I just eat what my body wants and so far so good. I would guess you'd want to see a gastroenterologist regularly for endoscopy (in case you get cancer?) or if you have any acid reflux. By the way, my manometry results weren't very helpful. The first one indicated scleroderma (which the rheumatologist later said no to) or a fungal infection. So the surgeon, rightfully, was hesitant to operate until I had a second manometry. My muscle was so tight the test couldn't be finished because the probe would curl--it turns out the first test couldn't measure the lower esophagus but instead of clearly indicating that it seemed to indicate there were only problems higher up! Luckily, with the 2nd test, the report was more clear so the surgeon operated, although he couldn't be 100% sure. The problem is, there isn't always 100% clarity on which motility problem one has. In my case it was clear that getting rid of that muscle would solve the biggest problem and he accepted that. Interestingly, the gastroenterologist was positive it was achalasia after my initial endoscopy. I would say we need to be more patient with the doctors. There are so few of us and the tests tend to indicate probabilities not certainties. Guest guest
As we all know, this condition is so rare few doctors can successfully diagnose it or treat it, very frustrating. I am wondering what the long term care is suggested after a HM and if these appointments are with GI specialists or surgeons. I have read where several people have gone to Dr. Rice, a surgeon, and they seem to do all follow ups with him. So who does everyone see and what testing is done long term? Thanks.
