Devin ... I had no issues with spAsms during labor... Amazingly! I also had an

epidural. But everyone is different... I would definitely talk with your

doctor.

Did you have any esophagus problems? Did you have an epidural? Has anyone had an

unmedicated delivery without complications? Ideally I would like to do this drug

free, but I know that if my esophagus decides to steal the show I will probably

have to go right past pain meds to being completely knocked out. My doctors

don't know anything about achalasia and I need to be well informed so I can

educate them and we can all be prepared for whatever might happen. (There are no

doctors in a reasonable driving distance who do, and I'm not willing to drive

3-4 hours while in labor to get to a big city!)

I had problems with spasms in the last trimester, mostly because mine are

triggered by gas and the pressure on my stomach happened more frequently when I

was really, really pregnant. Also, due to my myotomy, I had bad problems with

reflux and occasional aspiration when I was sleeping, during the third

trimester. I had to elevate a lot and eat early to avoid it towards the end

there. I also had a partial bowel obstruction that they think was caused by

adhesions due to my myotomy/fundo surgery. That kept me from dilating until they

gave me an enema. Because my labor was so long and I was having intestinal

spasms, I ended up with an epidural which I hated, and if I have another child,

I'm going to work hard to avoid having one. I did not have any spasms when I was

in active labor either, I think since my intestines were empty.
