Peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM - peroral means through the mouth), is

a way of doing a myotomy endoscopically by going in through the open

mouth and then through the esophagus to make the myotomy. This means you

don't have those little incisions in your abdomen like when it is done

laparoscopically. You do however end up with at least one incision

through your esophagus wall.

More important to me is the result of the myotomy not where the

incisions are. Some people may care more about scars, but I would go

with the method the doctor felt best about. If he always does it this

way and get good results then this is probably the way to go with him,

but if his results or experience are not as good as another docs

consider going to the other doc over staying for the method.

This topic has come up before under a different term than peroral. I

don't remember how it was referred to then.
