Guest guest
Hi, I am not very much sleepy tonight as I had a nap today so spending this " My " time to write details of my son's surgery. The surgery was on Monday morning 7/11 and it took about 1 1/2 hours in the operating room. It was done by Dr. Dempsey who was at Temple hospital and now is at Hospital of University of Pennsylvania. It was done laproscopically. It was tough waiting to hear the news on how things were going. UPN hospital has this big screen monitor on the wall which tells you when the surgery started and when it is done and when the patient is in the recovery room. Doctors came down to let us know that the surgery went well. My son was then transferred to his room and I could stay with him being that he is 16 and a minor. He was in pain and very uncomfortable in the hospital bed. He was up every 20 minutes with pain. Our surgeon Dr Dempsey is a great doctor, very much treated my son like his and things went exactly as he promised us. Although my experience with the hospital was not very impressive considering it ranks #10 among hospitals. I did not see any difference in their services. Anyways, the next day we had the swallow test for the leaks. There were no leaks although the complete drink did not empty out. I am told that this is normal at times after the surgery, it is sore inside and has blood etc that cause it to delay and the main reason for the test is for leakage and that was fine, he could move to clear liquids. Has anyone else have this experience and how did it work out finally. Next day, on Tuesday afternoon and he was discharged with 3 prescriptions-one for pain relief Tylenol #3 Elixere, one for nausea Zofran and one for acidity Prilosec (I got the generic brand starts with O). Dr. Dempsey gave us his cell# to call with any questions. Her did mention that it takes 3 months before you can really judge for the complete relief. After hearing my son is doing fine with clear liquids, he has told us that tomorrow he can move to liquids. Today-Wednesday 1st day back from the hospital he did feel some heartburn and some acidity, I then realized that I had given him lemonade flavored Gatorade, not a smart choice and have corrected the mistake by stopping to give him any citric foods. Is that the cause? His band aid is out and he could shower today. What a nice feeling? He is walking around the house a little and gets tired quickly maybe due to lack of nutrients and lots of medicine. So far he seems to be doing good. We have to schedule a follow up, I think in a week or two from tomorrow. Can't remember what the doctor had told me, blanking out with so much to think and make sure the recovery goes smoothly. That is it for now that is all I can remember to share, let me know if anyone has any questions. Thanks for listening to those who have already have had this experience. Priti From: zlmmom1 <mcnairmichelle@...> Subject: Priti achalasia Date: Sunday, July 10, 2011, 5:54 AM  good luck tomorrow. Rest assured you have done your research and asked the questions and made the best decision you can. Just be sure that your son doesn't rush his diet too much - it's very exciting in the beginning to get food down and he's going to want everything in sight!! I remember getting a phone call from , after her son (who I think was 16 at the time) was about 2 weeks post-op and had eaten a burger and fries at school and was suffering for it! She wanted me to help him understand that a burger was a little too much, too soon - you know those stubborn teenagers. Keep it soft and mushy for a few weeks and tell him to eat small bites and chew well - he'll be back to a full diet in no time and this will all seem like a bad dream. Did you ever tell us who is doing the surgery? I'll be thinking about you tomorrow - please post when you can and let us know he's OK. ~ in NC

Guest guest
Thank you the details are great. I am in Texas and I am looking for a surgeon that really has my son's best interest at heart, its hard since this is so rare. I needed to hear the news so that I can make an informed decision on what to do about my 15 year old son. Thanks again   From: Preeti Mahajan <priti19.mahajan@...> achalasia Sent: Wednesday, July 13, 2011 10:48 PM Subject: Re: Priti-Surgery details 7/11-7/13  Hi, I am not very much sleepy tonight as I had a nap today so spending this " My " time to write details of my son's surgery. Guest guest
I'm so happy that things are going well. Few walks during the day and remember to sleep with the wedge pillow and everyday you will see improvement. Before you know it he will be out with his friends enjoying a burger and fries. So so happy for him. God bless, SO CAL ________________________________ From: Preeti Mahajan <priti19.mahajan@...> achalasia Sent: Wednesday, July 13, 2011 8:48 PM Subject: Re: Priti-Surgery details 7/11-7/13  Hi, I am not very much sleepy tonight as I had a nap today so spending this " My " time to write details of my son's surgery. Guest guest
Hi Priti- I was so glad to see young post. i have been thinking of you and and am relieved to hear you are home and healing. All sounds good so far. Keep taking care of yourself too-- care taking is exhausting. Soon you will be moving into the pureed food stage and it will be so satisfying, Yesterday I ate an entire can of tunafish with a 1/2 cup of mayo all blended together. A wonderful change from fruit juice and protein powder. Seems like I make progress in fits and starts-- i was so exhausted for the first week, I had to nap at least once a day if not more. Then yesterday I had a burst of energy and actually cleaned out a coupled cupboards. Must be all the mayo So hang in there- sound like he is doing great. -day 9 post Myotomy 650-255-5928
Guest guest
Monicqua, Dr Dempsey (surgeon) and Dr. Richter (GI) in Philadelphia both suggested the surgery works the best for young males so I trusted them with it. Let me know if you have any questions. Priti From: zlmmom1 <mcnairmichelle@...> Subject: Priti achalasia Date: Sunday, July 10, 2011, 5:54 AM Â good luck tomorrow.
