are you sure bc/bs won't cover? I went to penn. from NC and never had an issue

with coverage. Call them.

If they refuse to cover, call Dr. L's office after you schedule an appt and ask

their billing people to get involved. They should be able to get you covered.

Good morning. Thank you so much for your response. This has been weighing

heavily on me for sometime now, its to the point to where my 15 year old son

asked me, " Was he going to die from this? " It was hard for me to keep a

straight face without breaking down but later while in my room I did break down.

Do you know anything about the Heller myotomy surgery? Monicqua in Texas

thank for posting, I've been watching to see your post. I have a special place

in my heart for the teens with A - I used to be one!

Yes, I would avoid anything even citrus flavored, I would also avoid caffeine

and carbonation. When he moves on to full liquids, I would still keep it bland

and only have him take a few sips at a time. Cream soups work well or yogurt

drinks or milkshakes - his bowels may be a bit off in the beginning - that's

normal.

Even when he goes to mushy foods, I'd avoid too many spices or anything acidic -

keep it kind of soft and bland in the beginning - mashed potatoes, mac and

cheese, chicken or tuna salad, scambled eggs are good.

I hope he feels better soon and please keep us posted.

Thanks for the suggestion. He will probably enjoy the mac and cheese very much

when he is ready for soft food.   That is good that you told me about caffeine

as I was going to give him yohoo drink as it had lots of nutrients but it may be

best to keep it away for now.

Now that he is on liquids he had apple juice for breakfast, mango ice cream for

morning snack and wants vanilla ice cream for lunch, I guess that should be

fine.  Do you think any milk shake other than chocolate should be fine during

his liquid diet...correct.

I will get him the cream of chicken soup for tomorrow, it comes in can, correct?

Thanks,

Priti

I am not so sure about mac-n-cheese. No disrespect meant to who took

the time to post about the fact that she understands what your son is going

through, but pasta tends to stick together going down. Any food that can form

into a firm ball should be treated with caution, especially soon after surgery.

I assume you have been given a post fundoplication diet? It is counter-intuitve,

but toast is better for us than bread. Crackers are even better. Cream cheese

and jelly on toast or crackers tastes good. I forget how many days I had to wait

after surgery to eat that sort of thing, but it wasn't long.

We have two long term problems post heller/dor. One is that, in spite of the

fact that our achalasia is way better, we still have it. I can eat or drink just

about anything if I take smaller bites and chew thoroughly. Steamed clams are

not on my menu anymore. Most people don't even notice. But some foods cause me

more trouble than others. When my esophagus is irritated, it is harder to

swallow.

The second thing is GERD. Achalasia is its opposite, but the myotomy makes it

more likely that things will back up from our stomachs. This is especially true

at night. I notice this more after the kinds of acidic things is

talking about. Once the LES is irritated, it becomes inflamed and we have more

trouble swallowing again.

I often drink carbonated beverages with food because it helps me swallow. Lots

of us do. I also drink coffee and love margaritas. If I drink the citrus before

bed or have pasta and red sauce late, I will pay for it by 3 AM and it is not

fun.
