His case may be like the animal studies where the obstruction was caused

by banding. When the obstruction was removed soon enough the peristalsis

eventually returned. With achalasia often it will probably be to late by

the time treatment is done to restore much of the peristalsis. There are

some studies that report the the earlier treatment is done the more

likely it is that some peristalsis could return:

Factors involved in the return of peristalsis in patients with achalasia

of the cardia after Heller's myotomy

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7733074

" CONCLUSIONS: Return of peristalsis is a frequent phenomenon after

myotomy in patients with achalasia of the cardia, especially in cases of

short clinical evolution, little esophageal dilation, and a conserved

contractile capacity, although its accurate production mechanism is

unknown. "

( " Return " and " Frequent " need some qualifying. Return in the upper

esophagus was much more frequent than in the lower esophagus. Only 8.8%

had return in the lower esophagus but only 40% of the waves were

progressive. In other words, the peristalsis was still somewhat

dysfunctional even when it did " return " .)

Return of esophageal peristalsis after nifedipine therapy in patients

with idiopathic esophageal achalasia

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1449129

" Thirty-two patients were treated ... After 6 months, peristalsis was

observed in six patients. In this group, no pretreatment manometric

parameter was different from that of the remaining achalasic patients;

only the clinical history of dysphagia was significantly shorter (p <

0.001) and the esophageal diameter significantly less (p < 0.001). "

Those wanting to wait to get treatment may want to consider these studies.
