Hello Friends,

Another suggestion needed.

Dr had recommended that my son should try to maintain his weight as he did lose

a lot in the past month. He recommended Ensure and breakfast carnation. I do

not know what I may be thinking or not thinking that I picked up ensure clinical

strength Revigor immune balance vanilla milk shake. I did not think thatit may

be thick for it to go down. So now my son is not feeling well and did not even

eat anything tonight. Does anyone know of anything else that is easy to go down

and can help maintain his weight till surgery in July.

Thanks,

Priti

Priti,

This may come across as silly, but I used to drink warmed up chocolate ensure

with about 1/4 cup of milk added (enough to thin it out). I heated it in a

coffee mug and pretended I was having coffee. It worked:)

Try the same for your son and he can pretend it's hot chocolate!

I wish you and your family all the best of luck!

I know how he feels!! It is very thick, I drank the carnation breakfast. It was

a lot thinner and much easier to get down. You might try the powder and add just

a cup of milk that might be even better for him then the already made bottles.

I'll be thinking of him and he will get better...many of us have

My daughter had the carnation breakfast drink...any thing he will drink to stay

hydrated. Right b4 surgery my dd and I  ended up in 4 Emergency rooms as her

electrolights were messed up. She did eat alot of Stouffers Spinach

Souffle(frozen food area)...which I was happy about for the iron content. Mashed

potatoes and gravy...smoothies...do you have a smoothie maker...add fruit,

yogurt and some juice and them blend. Spaghettios seemed ok . Noodles over

cooked a bit. Pudding. Any thing soft...I used my crock pot alot to cook the

meat until it was very tender if he can tolerate it. Peanut butter if he can

tolerate soft bread with water to down it.

I thought Ensure was difficult to get down, I liked the Odwalla drinks, seems

like the super protein one was the just right texture. If things are too thin,

they come right back up. There was something about that thickness and texture

of that Odwalla super protein that was easier.

What is difficult for non-achalasians to understand is that pureeing or

mushiness isn't that helpful to some of us. I always said nachos, with the

cheese almost burnt (homemade in the oven nachos), hamburgers with lots of

mayonnaise, many high fat things were much easier than something like pureed

peas. Unless you put 4 tablespoons of butter with them also. Some people do

well with eggs, I didn't but something like a quiche might work, probably

because of the fat in the cream or milk.

Sugar cookies, and the protein or power bars that aren't low fat could work

sometimes.

Vegetables, whether pureed or baked or whatever were not successful, unless they

had a lot of butter.

I also liked oatmeal with brown sugar, cinnamon, and butter.

Hi ,

He is 16 years old, in HS10th grade.  He is losing weight but not at a drastic

rate.  Just that doctor did not want him to lose too much more before the

surgery.  He recommended ensure and breakfast carnation.  He can eat solids

with 5 glasses of water to push it down.  So dehydration will supposedly won't

be a problem, I did not think, I should have known that ensure has a milk shake

thickness which can be difficult to chug down.  Like you recommended I should

always be thinking of powder for him for anything first. I will try Pastina.

Thank you for all the suggestions.  Someone also advised that I should check

out GNC which carries powders that are full of calories and can help with the

weight.  I will check it out and share with everyone here in case it helps.

I will definitely keep you posted.  I am sorry to hear that you too had it

during your teen years, how are you doing now.

Thanks,

Priti

You are right Sandy..some soft foods are even more difficult as my son has

mentioned too as the water goes right through it rather then pushing the food

down..for example, he can eat fruit yogurt anymore.  He does well with bagel

and eggs, pizza harder food seem to work for him.  But he cannot eat a lot of

it as he starts feeling it is piling up.

I hope to stop by GNC this weekend to check out their aisle of weight gainer

powders and will share my experience here.

Thanks,

In the 70's they had no idea what I had, being a teenager the docs thought I had

an eating disorder. It got so bad that my mom slept in my room with me because I

couldn't even swallow my saliva. Scary. Finally went to s Hopkins and had

many dilations and my first Heller. It lasted about 10 yrs. I was able to have

three healthy children. We moved to LA and Dr. Maish at UCLA did my 2nd Heller.

In dec. I finally had to have my E removed. It has been such a great difference

for me in a good way. I'm even enjoying cooking. I'm taking cooking classes with

my teenage daughter. Can't eat large portions, but I am good in every other way.

So will your son. That is so great that he can have solids, and the water

doesn't back up. Maybe after the surgery the Pastina will be easy for him until

he heals.

All my Best

Hi Priti,

What worked for me was pureed low salt vegetable soups with a little meat. I

made it liquidy and soupy. Also nutritionally much better than some of the

shakes. The warmth is also good. It digests very well. You can add a little

well cooked rice.

I drank the soups last year when I could not keep anything else down. I made

them myself. Some of the fruit and protein shakes might be good too, but after

looking at the ingredients and texture of Ensure, I don't recommend it.

I used liquid vitamin mineral oomplex. I noticed that COSTCO has a good one of

these.

My sons doctor recommended super shakes. I think you buy the powder at GNC. Not

sure how they taste but they're around 1000 calories a shake. I could always get

him to drink milkshakes :)

Hi All,

I have heard this for YEARS!!! When I was diagnosed and had surgery I weighed

about 65-70 pounds. I gained about 50 pounds after surgery and when I asked my

doctors for help it was either " its not our problem " or " what are you

complaining about we fixed your problem " . No help...EVER....in 33 years. A not

so bright doctor recently suggested I have a stomach band....oh right I said and

" what part of ACHALASIA do you not understand? " To which he responded...well

isnt there something you can drink!! I had to leave before I hit him! Nope you

are basicly on your own, but I do intend to ask this question at the symposium

this weekend!!

Blessings,

JC

After 15 years of 170-230/90-120, I am aiming for 140-145/80.

I take my BP in the morning at the table on my left arm right after

i get up. I have white coat syndrome at home.

I can literally feel my BP rising sometimes.

Also I dont know if this is relevant but I have also started the

Relaxation Response and Meditating deeply.

THis morning it was 138/78. I am still eating low salt too.

I read your file on how to take the BP so I do it as best I can. I

can tell when my BP is high. So I know this is a true reading.

Always take 3 and discard 1St one. Ave last 2. If your arm size has decreased so that your cuff better fits your AC your readings may be lower as well. Is BP different bt arms? If so use highest arm. May your pressure be low!CE Grim MS, MDSpecializing in DifficultHypertensionOn Feb 27, 2012, at 13:18, Phyllis <phylisrn@...> wrote:

After 15 years of 170-230/90-120, I am aiming for 140-145/80.

I take my BP in the morning at the table on my left arm right after

i get up. I have white coat syndrome at home.

I can literally feel my BP rising sometimes.

Also I dont know if this is relevant but I have also started the

Relaxation Response and Meditating deeply.

THis morning it was 138/78. I am still eating low salt too.

I read your file on how to take the BP so I do it as best I can. I

can tell when my BP is high. So I know this is a true reading.

Great weight loss. BP reduction most likely due to

both a reduction in Na and the Inspra. What is the goal BP you are

shooting for?

Tell us exactly how and when you are measuring BP.

May your salt intake and

pressure be low!

I was 260 lbs. I am now at 235lbs. The Inspra was

giving me GI upset. I am also doing Weight Watcher

and getting my V8 twice a day.

I was taking Inspra 50mg daily. I am now taking

Inspra 25mg daily with lower blood pressures. So I

am wondering is it the weight loss or was I taking

too much

Inspra for my system. I have been taking the lower

dose of Inspra for 6 days now. My stomach also feel

better.

When one eats less one also eats less sodium.

So it is difficult to test this. The DASH

studies of however held weight constant by

adjusting calories each day or so. So the DASH

effect is not related to weight loss. I have had

patients lose 70lbs with DASH. just set

calories at day 1800 and down u go.

Our research suggests that weight alone

plays a very small part in BP in the population

due to a plateau effect. ie after BP exceeds

140/90 increasing weight has not effect on

increasing BP. But the only way to test in u is

to test in u. What has been your own experience?

May your pressure be low!
