Guest guest
Anybody watching the computer vs people competition on Jeopardy? I missed it but did see the NOVA special on the making of . IBM has announced that it will give half of 's winnings to WCG. For those that don't know, the World Community Grid (WCG) is a grid of volunteer computers that donate unused computer time/cycles to help research. Much of that researches is and has been medical. The projects are computationally intense and would require thousands of years of time on normal computers but can be done in a few years, sometime less than a year, on the WCG. As impressive as is it only has something like 6000 CPUs connected together. The WCG claims 1,707,246 devices, many with multiple cores connected together over the internet. For more information about the Jeopardy winnings going to charity see: http://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/33373.wss notan
