If I do everything I think I should (sleep at 30+ degree angle, never let

stomach get too empty, drink water immediately upon waking and moving around,

etc. etc. ETC.),

just wondering what some etc, etc, etc...are...I'm learning through y'all and

hoping to find some things I haven't learned yet.

Plus, I'm trying to figure out why pepsi is so good with clearing your throat.

It makes me burp (which is impossible for me other wise but very painful!!!)

and I was wondering if anyone else has problems with sinus drainage or mucus ALL

THE TIME! sometimes it chokes me and is the cause for food getting stuck at

first...I throw up mucus so much!! Is it a side effect of dehydration or is

there something I can do for it?

thanks!!

Sometimes when there is no food in my e, I too choke all night on mucus, and I

have no clue where is comes from!  I end up sleeping on the sofa at a 90 degree

angle, anything to sleep!  Bless us all :)

How much angle is needed is up to you. You may need more or less. 30

degrees seems like a lot to me.

Your " etc " will not necessarily be someone else's. Pay attention to when

you are doing good and bad and see if you can tell why. If you can find

a reason let us know. Maybe someone else is like you and has it figured out.

Carbonation in drinks starts to fizz when it comes in contact with some

kinds of things. If you have ever put salt or nuts in a carbonated drink

you may have seen the bubble form around it. You may even have notice

that an imperfection that you can't even see is causing bubbles to

continuously form from the same place on the glass surface. You may also

have notice that bubbles forming on things in the drink can cause them

to rise and float. Fizz can cause the food in the esophagus to lift,

separate and break up. That is just one of things it does though. The

fizz on the sides of the esophagus and the distention from the pressure

may simulate contractions, peristaltic or otherwise that may force food

though the LES. Depending on how well the burp reflex is working, the

fizz may also cause a buildup of pressure in the esophagus to help push

the food through the LES while it relaxes the LES. To burp gas from the

stomach the LES has to relax, to burp from the esophagus the UES (upper

esophageal sphincter) most relax. Think of the pressure that forms when

you shake a carbonated drink in a bottle pushing food through the LES.

However, if the constricting pressure of the LES is too much and can not

be overcome and the burp reflex does not let you release the pressure it

can be very painful. Also if that pressure can't get though the LES it

has to go somewhere and that can be a problem. A dilated esophagus will

take more drink to build pressure. An esophagus with more nerve damage

is going to respond differently form one with less. There are a lot of

factors and it is still a bit of a mystery. You can see why there is

room for people to respond differently to carbonation.

We swallow mucus and saliva all the time. In achalasia they can mix and

be agitated into the white foam we have problems with. Some people have

more trouble than others do with it. We can have spasm that don't cause

pain. Mostly we hear about spasm when they cause pain. But some people

know they had them because they were seen in tests even though they were

not having pain at the time. I wonder, but don't know, that spasms help

to whip the saliva and mucus into that foam. If you have more spasms or

other dysfunctional contractions then you may have more of a problem

with foam. Just a guess.
