Guest guest
Hi Cara Thank you for your prayers. The abnormal barium swallow is a little concerning to me as i have never come across this before in someone who has had the esophagectomy for Achalasia. The doctor who did the barium swallow did ask me a few questions though such as, " What tests for Achalasia did you have done " ? and " What surgeries had i had for Achalasia " ?. Guess i will just have to be patient and wait to see the surgeon on July 4th in clinic. from the UK From: spotoca <cspoto@...> achalasia Sent: Tuesday, June 7, 2011 7:03 PM Subject: Re: Abnormal Barium Swallow? Â , Sounds to me like 2 things. First you will need to remove the scar tissue from the anastomosis. I guess its too tough for a balloon so maybe surgery would be the next step to remove it and open up the passageway. As for the birds beak at the bottom of your stomach? I think that is the pyloric sphincter and I am not sure if Achalasia can affect it. I wonder if a dilitation is needed to open it up more so that food can pass through. I will do some research so see if there are documented cases of Achalasia of the pyloric Sphincter. For now hang in there. I feel like you are getting to the bottom of this situation. My prayers are with you! Cara > > Hi All > Had my Barium Swallow yesterday in Liverpool. The pictures and videos taken clearly show a holdup around the ectomy anastomosis with some barium remaining above it. The barium then goes through down to the bottom of my stomach in what clearly looks like a birds beak shape which the doctor said was Classic Achalasia. they were willing to chat about the birds beak but not about the possible pictures and videos of the anastomosis. I know that i had no right to ask the doctor questions because she said that she wants to consult with a couple of colegues before making out a report for my surgeon before my July 4th outpatient appointment. now how can i have Classic Achalasia at the bottom of my stomach after an ectomy? this i shall bring up in clinic ans well as a multitude of questions about the anastomosis and why barium remained trapped there (the doctor showed me this on the video). Guest guest
Actualy Jeff the answer is no. At the time that i had the ectomy done i never had the pyloroplasty done and in fact was never offered to have it done at the same time as the ectomy back in October 2004. I will bring that up at clinic on July 4th actually. Thank you. from the UK From: jp_shaw1 <jp_shaw1@...> achalasia Sent: Wednesday, June 8, 2011 11:18 AM Subject: Re: Abnormal Barium Swallow?  Was wondering if you had pyloroplasty done at the time of your ectomy? My surgeon did a pyloroplasty in conjunction with the gastric pull-up during my ectomy. Really hope you find relief and resolution very soon. Guest guest
Again Thank you Cara for sending another interesting link to a possible cause for my stomach being very slow to empty on the Barium. from the UK From: jp_shaw1 <jp_shaw1@...> achalasia Sent: Wednesday, June 8, 2011 11:30 AM Subject: Re: Abnormal Barium Swallow? Â This article may be of interest. Remembering that most ectomies are done for cancer there are cases of lower stomach obstruction after an ectomy. Maybe more likely the cause then another type of achalasia. http://www.faqs.org/abstracts/Health/Pyloroplasty-versus-no-drainage-in-gastric-\ replacement-of-the-esophagus.html > > > > > > Hi All > > > Had my Barium Swallow yesterday in Liverpool.
