Guest guest
I remember that this was a big thing before better screening of the blood supply was practiced. There are people who advocate for " autologous collection " , but the literature seems to run a toward the skeptical side of the practice.

For example, athan Cluett, writing in About.com orthopedics, says that the increased risk of needing a transfusion as a result of autologous donation, among other risks, causes him to discourage his pre-operative patients from this practice, unless he thinks it likely they will be needing a transfusion.

In Medscape, Nuttall of the Mayo Clinic, concludes that " Autologous collection is an expensive process which ultimately results in waste in many cases. " (Article #41432)

We don't want anyone who is unwiling to accept a transfusion from someone else to die in those cases where something goes wrong. Keep in mind that miracles happen in hospitals every day because of HIPPA. You can refuse the transfusion in front of those who would publish your actions, and request it outside of visiting hours. It will be up to you to keep the secret or not.

Dan

Sent from on Android
