Hi Betty

I am also 80 and have classical Achalasia after a manomety test 3 years ago,

started 5 years ago as indigestion in the night. Have not had an operation etc.

Took 4 GI doctors to find my problem.

Where are you? What is a PCP? My wife is also 80 and named Betty.

I thought at first I was Celiac. Also was checked for a hiatal hernia.

Hi Betty

In California 50 years between LA and San Diego, was from Canada origionally.

Also On Medicare with a supplement policy , United Medical/AARP. Costs $225 a

month each , about $450 total. Worth every penny, can go to any Doctor or any

hospital with out being referred. Just call up any doctor saying you have a

supplement policy with medicare. they will welcome you, like mad. It never costs

me a thing, I had a stroke during an Angiogram 14 years ago and a bypass later.

Had many tests which my GP perscribed, catscan, MRI, etc then went to 4 GI

doctors on my own. Also see a Cardiologist for my heart on my own with tests I

ask then to make. Comes out of our SS.

If you can afford it, this would be MUCH better than a HMO, you can change on

your birthday at 80. With all the things you might want to have done, this would

really help.

Yes it is terrible geting so old but we made it to 80. Glad you found us, you

wil get great help if it is Achalasia.

Ask notan any questions you may have, he knows more than ANY doctor.

Ray Calif Orange County 80 old as hell, but very active.

Hi Betty

>I want nothing to to do with AARP

It is UnitedMedicalCare, one of the biggest insurances companies, sponsored by

AARP. You do not have to join AARP.

Believe me you can go to ANY doctor or ANY Hospital if they accept Medicare, NO

referrals required. In this area All doctors, GI doctors or Cardiologists love

Medicare with a supplement. I have never heard of a doctor who would not accept

Medicare.

If you have Achalasia you need to go to LA or Phoenix to get an expert, like

UCLA, USC or Cedars. If you are in a HMO it would be impossible to go out of

network. You need an expert, one who has done 100 or more operations or

dilations. Or go to Cleveland clinic or Mayo.

Since you are a traveler maybe to Phoenix, they have experts and also Mayo

Clinic, I believe notan lives in Phoenix.

The plan I have is the best, you don't need it, Plan C covers everything and is

a bit cheaper, maybe $200/m.

You could sigh up for a year, then go back to the HMO, next year. For only $2400

you could go out of network and get an expert. You really do need an expert if

it is Achalasia! I believe you can do it once a year on the month following your

birthday. Also no medical history is required. United Medical has one price

independant of age for Medicare oner 65. They advertise on TV all the time.
