Guest guest
I have not had time to completely look at this new study but something jumped out that I want to share: JAMA Laparoscopic Antireflux Surgery vs Esomeprazole Treatment for Chronic GERD The LOTUS Randomized Clinical Trial http://jama.ama-assn.org/content/305/19/1969.full In this study they randomly assigned patients to either stay on a PPI or have a fundoplication. They started with 554 patients and ended the 5 year follow-up with 372 patients (192 who used esomeprazole and 180 who had surgery). There was one hip fracture in each group. Having only one fracture in the PPI group is raising question about other studies that suggested that PPI may raise the risk of fractures. In the words of the study authors, " The few hip fractures we observed suggest that fractures are rare with PPI and that previous observational studies might have overestimated the risk of these events. " This should be good news to those of us taking PPIs, though more studies are needed to settle the issue. notan
