Guest guest
Hi , I live in Oconomowoc area...actually south of there in Village of Summit. My daughter Amber goes to Childrens Hospital. I dont know where an adult with Achalasia would go although since Childrens is in cahoots with Froedert I would think they may have some peeps. But the nice folks on this site are directing me to Docs and Hospitals that actually do alot of procedures and have more insight and experience with the disease. Keep watching I am sure I will get some great info. I am in Waukesha. My husband has achalasia, unfortunately he was treated before I found this group & we didn't do our homework. Guest guest
,  Would you happen to know anything about Dr. Dempsey at the Temple University? Would anyone know if he is equally good as Dr. Rice, Dr.Luketich in Pittsburgh and Dr. Patti. My insurance covers Dr. Dempsey but not other doctor's. However I do seek the best for my 16 year old son. I know few people have suggested him but is he one of the best in achlasia surgery?  Any advise/suggestion from anyone in the group is welcomed  Thanks, Priti   From: zlmmom1 <mcnairmichelle@...> Subject: Re: Docs and Hospitals achalasia Date: Wednesday, May 18, 2011, 5:17 AM  Maureen - I just googled dr. patti and found this link http://www.uchospitals.edu/physicians/marco-patti.html I would go to either him, Dr. Rice in Cleveland or Dr. Luketich in Pittsburgh Dr. L's email is luketichjd @ UPMC.edu - take out the spaces - I emailed him and he contacted me within a day or two personally - if you speak with him, please tell him from the Outer Banks of NC - who had an ectomy 3 1/2 years ago says hi and I'm feeling great!! Guest guest
Hi Priti, I'm not , but and I have met in person (if that's any consolation). She might even refer to me in responding to your question about Dr. Dempsey. One of the best measures of the competence of a surgeon, whether its for achalasia (a very specialized area), or for other types of surgery is how many times the surgeon has performed this type of operation. It is generally accepted on this Board that Dr. Rice, Dr. Patti, and Dr. Luketich probably perform the greatest number of these surgeries, and their reputations as amongst the best (if not the best), is well deserved. Then there are the second tier of surgeons, very competent doctors who are probably nearly as good, and if the operation is considered to be routine, for all intents and purposes, might be just as good. Dr. Dempsey, lesser known, is connected with GI Dr. Richter, who is extremely well known, plus Richter worked with Dr. Rice for many years. As many of the people on this Board knows, when I was told by Dr. Altorki in 2006 that I had to have an ectomy, I went to Dr. Richter for a second opinion, and he agreed with Dr. Altorki. That same day I went to Dr. Dempsey for a third opinion. He felt it could wait. In 2011, 5 years later, it can still wait. Priti, I got a very good sense of Dr. Dempsey. I felt that from Dr. Richter's recommendation about him, that he was a top notch surgeon, yet unlike many surgeons, I found him to be compassionate about his patients, plus conservative in his approach. ( " Do no harm " kind of thing). For a myotomy I would feel very comfortable recommending him to you. I would ask one question of him (feel free to ask many, I did), and that is if he feels the operation on a 16 year old boy might involve any other skills or knowledge than an operation on an adult, and if so, how many myotomies he has performed on children.  ________________________________ From: Preeti Mahajan <priti19.mahajan@...> achalasia Sent: Wed, May 18, 2011 9:36:02 PM Subject: Re: Re: Docs and Hospitals  ,  Would you happen to know anything about Dr. Guest guest
Thank you . Since I am in NJ and Dr. Luketich is not covered in our insurance, how can this be pursued with our insurance so we can get coverage. Any advise? Would the doctor's office be able to help with this or I should be speaking with my NJ blue cross blue shield insurance representative. Any suggestion welcomed from the group? Thanks! Guest guest
When I first got diagnosed, it was by a local GI, who is one of the best in our area. I knew I was in trouble when he went to get a textbook and began reading to me about achalasia. Then, he started discussing dilation, etc. My husband and I ran from his office and have never looked back.  We didn't find this group, until after I found Dr. Rice at Cleveland Clinic. He is the one that actually told me about the group. Finding the right doctor is critical. I had my myotomy three years ago and have never looked back.  Pam in Ohio From: milwaukeemommy <milwaukeemommy@...> achalasia Sent: Tuesday, May 17, 2011 10:24 PM Subject: Re: Docs and Hospitals  Hi Maureen!!
