Have you ever tried Han's Honey Loquat syrup? You can take it straight or put it in tea. It is not labeled as a cough syrup but works well. It is imported from Hong Kong to the USA by Prince of Peace Enterprises. Their phone number is (800) 732-2328. I also have problems coughing until I throw up (did that last week, triple-ugh!!).

It says on the label: "...is a supreme quality Chinese traditional soothing beverage..." Love, Lee

i know just what you mean guin..... for over forty years i have been

getting the fluttering feeling in my chest and i have always forced a cough

to get it back to normal.... guess it worked, im still here.....

ive always had a skip in my heart beat....beat five,,,skip one....and some

days i still do....

i was in the hospital with pneumonia and they just happened to hang a

holter monitor on me.....and i guess it showed the arrythmia once or

twice.....i was sitting on the bed eating dinner when 4 nurses come running

in the room to see if i was alright...didnt even know it had occurred.

anyhoo,,,two days later and two heart caths later, i had this thingee stuck

in me....got zapeed twice last march and its had to do nothing in over a

year now....(i thank god for that everyday that i wake up)

the doc laughed at me when i told him i cough to get rid of the

flutters....but he put it on my chart that i self medicated myself with

coughs.....

that cracked me up...

Guin, When I went into VT during a treadmill stress

test my Dr. started yelling for me to cough at the

same time he was yelling for the defib machine(that

was before I got the ICD).The coughing brought me out

of it before they had to use the paddles which I was

very grateful for.So I'm with you! Keep on coughing

This is starting to worry me some. I've been thru the EKG thing,

echocardio thing, treadmill

thallium stress thing..... supposedly all is well. But i sometimes feel

this very 'tight' feeling in my

chest, and my heart skips beats and seems to 'flutter'. I can almost

instantly relieve this by deep

coughing. I do have high BP, am on accupril for that. They stopped the

thallium stress test before

i reached my target heart rate (based on your age), because my BP

skyrocketed. But even so,

they said that test showed normal function. So sayeth my doc.

Is it time, perhaps, to switch doctors? Or quit smoking? (even tho the

cardio guy/staff doing

the treadmill test kept asking was i some sort of athlete..... i never

got winded despite however

much they increased the rate). Or both?

The discussion of the benefits of coughing remind me of Linus ing's

advocacy of Vitamin C, which was generally not proven to be medically

(preventing the common cold, etc.) correct as ing said it was. Still

there are those--me, for one--who believe that there is a significant level

of truth to the idea and will continue to use it as a preventative to

whatever degree it provides. If in a bind, I'll try the coughing. I just

won't try to convince anyone that it is the cure that some have said.

hi sue,,

you just described what ive been doing most of my life....i would get a

fluttering feeling in my chest and maybe a bit lightheaded and a forced

cough would stop it... i mentioned to several docs over my adult life and

it was summarily dismissed as a fluke.

twice during hospital visits they put the holter monitor on me and found

nothing....til the infamous day of march 1 when my life changed....c'est le

vie...

i make the best of what ive got...

bill, do you remember some 35 years ago, the ama said that aspirin was not

a benefit in preventing heart attacks.....now they prescribe the stuff to

help thin the blood....ive been taking and aspirin most every day for forty

years now.....

and i to take vitamin e,,,,aside from the asthma problems and the heart

troubles ive not had a cold or the flu in more than 8 years...

but, admittedly,,,im first in line for that flu shot every year....

Bill -

I like your approach -- I mean, if you're in that situation, it's not like coughing is gonna hurt anything -- just might help to prevent a zap, and if it doesn't then the ICD will do it's job.

Bill,

That's the way I look at also. When I posted the web site on the subject, it

was for information only. Not a judgment on whether it was scientifically

proven to work or not to work. I look for facts when available, but in this

case, there apparently have been no studies done to approve or disapprove

the theory.

If I was in a difficult situation, I would probably start coughing also.

Thank you Chet... I was aware of the " legend " status of this method

of CPR... good to see you're checking things out rather than just

taking all for granted... although we intend to offer help here... we

really shouldn't take everything we read online as gospel.

Sue, I don't want to scrare you but my treadmill

test also was normal(that is normal for me, I had

already had by-pass surgery) but that didn't stop my

heart from going into v-tach while doing just fine on

the treadmill test.In fact I was feeling good and very

proud of myself for being able to get my heart rate up

where the Doc wanted it when all of a sudden I started

feeling dizzy and my heart started to flip flop. In

just a matter of seconds I was in full Ventricular

Tachycardia and it was all recorded on the test strip

they were running for the treadmill test. I do think

you should quit smoking but I know how easy that is to

say and how hard it is to do! I smoked for 30yr and

know that is at least part of the reason for my

problems now.Quiting smoking was one of the hardest

things I have ever had to do but it has been 8 yrs now

and I no longer even remember why I liked it but at my

age (66) I no longer remember a lot of things I used

to like!! LOL Really hope that there is nothing wrong

with your heart but it never hurts to have a second

opinion and I think if I were you I would get another

Dr's advice (preferably a cardio) just for your peace

of mind. Also, keep coughing!I'm going to as long as

it works whether its ever proven scientificly or not!

=====

This is the day that the Lord has made.Be happy and peaceful in it.May He bless

you greatly.

I find that coughing doesn't help the A-Fib I get every so often. I just have to ride it out.....which is hard to do. Lots of time sleep will stop it.

I think if you are in a situation where help isn't readily available then it can't hurt to try it while you wait.

Yes, I have very bad allergies, seasonal and environmental. I would get

bronchitis

all the time because I always had a trickle of phlegm flowing down the back of

my

throat, some of which would inevitably end up in my lungs. Finally, my doctor

prescribed Claritin (back before it was over the counter), and it still seems to

mostly fix the problem for me. I take 1 each day. The pills are really small

and

easy to swallow. You can also take Alavert that dissolves in your mouth, if

swallowing is an issue.

Hi Kathy,

I also have Type 2. Until I got my ventilator and made some

lifestyle changes, I was in the hospital every year beginning at the

age of 11 at least once during the spring with bronchitis or

pneumonia. Smog in the Silicon Valley growing up, and later the

pollen count wherever I am, have always wreaked havoc with me. I use

Allegra when my respiratory system feels vulnerable. I tried

Claritin, but it made my lungs feel tight. I swear by Gan Mao Ling

at the 1st sigh of a cough.

My last respiratory infection was in May 2000. Before that was

probably spring 1994. I don't use any respiratory equipment other

than a non-invasive ventilator 20 hrs. per day, and a nebulizer with

a bronchial dialator once every 12-18 months.

I imagine your daughter is growing fast. Allergies may be a new

thing she's dealing with. Good luck with puzzling out the right

combination of care strategies for her. It's not fun being sick just

when the weather gets good.

It's Chinese herbal formula that work very well for me. Chinese herbs

and acupuncture have helped me with stamina and respiratory issues,

though, have done little for my lpain, digestion and bladder infections.

Here are two links about it. I prefer the Plum Flower Brand:

All I can tell you is my personal experience. When I drink cold drinks

I have a coughing fit. Or when I go from a warm area to a cold area I

have a coughing fit. Or when I do dishes with the steamy hot water I

have a coughing fit. Its a touch of asthma. Doctors gave me tests for

asthma, but I passed all. So thier conclusion is a slight touch of

asthma. I take claritin almost daily. It helps.
